The first weekly roundup for volleyball includes all matches played through Aug. 23.
Clay (2-2) opened the season by splitting four matches, falling to Notre Dame (25-13, 21-25, 11-25, 25-14, 15-11) and Ottawa-Glandorf (20-25, 25-22, 25-16) before defeating Miami East (25-14, 25-16) and St. Henry (25-19, 18-25, 25-14).
Eme Goetz led the Eagles offense against Notre Dame with 28 kills at a .292 hitting percentage. The all-conference star added 11 digs, two aces, and two blocks. Brooklyn Mariea added eight terminations. Adleigh Derr had a team-best 12 digs, four aces, and two blocks, while Leah Hazuda had a team-best 35 assists and two aces.
Goetz tacked on 18 kills, seven digs, two aces, and one block against Ottawa-Glandorf. Hazuda dished out 20 assists and five digs. Zoe Nowacki produced a team-best 12 digs, while Derr added 10. Mariea led the Eagles with two blocks, and she had two aces. Audrey Vriezelaar led the team in aces with four.
Goetz had 15 kills, three digs, and two aces in a pair of sets against Miami East. Derr and Nowacki each tallied five digs, while Vriezelaar joined Goetz with three more each. Mariea and Nowacki registered the team’s two blocks.
Once again, Goetz led the offense with 24 kills against St. Henry. Hazuda (3), Vriezelaar (2), and Mariea (2) combined for seven additional terminations. Goetz also notched a season-best nine aces, while the group of Mariea, Vriezelaar, Nowacki, and Aubree Besgrove had a pair of blocks apiece. Hazuda dished out 23 assists and tied Derr for the team-best in digs with seven.
Eastwood (0-2) dropped a pair of matches to Archbold (25-18, 25-21, 25-19) and Whitmer (19-25, 25-19, 16-25, 25-21, 15-11) to open the season.
Mack Miller led the Eagles with 15 kills on 28 attempts with just one error against Archbold. The senior added six digs, as well, while Olivia Riter had a team-best 23 assists. Stella Chlebowski led the way with nine digs, while Macey White and Maya Schmeltz split the team’s two blocks. Vanessa Evans (7), Riter (4), and White (4) added 15 terminations combined.
Miller had a huge performance with 21 kills and 20 digs against Whitmer, while Evans (7) and Jadyn Richards (5) added 12 combined terminations. Addyson Leppelmeier and White had three aces each, and Chlebowski added three more. White (5) and Richards (4) led the team in stuffs, while Chlebowski (16), Riter (10), and White (9) totaled 35 digs. Riter had 38 assists to lead the Eagles.
Genoa (1-0) swept Woodmore (25-18, 26-24, 25-15) to open its season. Makenna Moritz (14) and Riley Sinift (12) combined for 26 kills, while Lucy Schlageter (5) and Vivian Clement (4) added nine more. Sinift (4), Schlageter (3), and Moritz (2) combined for nine aces. Sinift led the Comets with four blocks. Moritz (10), Sinift (9), Makayla Zaciewski (8), Mya Rethman (7), Schlageter (6), and Clement (5) combined for 45 of the team’s 46 digs, while Schlageter dished out 18 assists.
Gibsonburg (1-1) opened the season by splitting a tri-match at Bellevue, knocking off Oak Harbor (25-17, 25-9) and falling to Bellevue (25-23, 25-17).
Riley Gressman led the offense against Oak Harbor with nine kills and two aces. Ava Dawson (six kills, two digs), Zoe Halbeisen (six kills, two aces, one block), and Mackenzie Muntz (six kills, three blocks) also contributed offensively. Brooklyn Smith and Mia Brink each led the team with 10 digs, while the versatile Katie Hall recorded 23 assists, three kills, two digs, one ace, and one block.
Hall added 15 assists against Bellevue, while Gressman notched eight more terminations. Brink (6), Taegan Davis (5), and Sophia Foos (4) combined for 15 digs. Halbeisen chipped in four kills, Lacey Castillo had four digs, and Muntz had three aces and two blocks.
Lake (2-0) won a pair of hard-fought matches over Sandusky Perkins (25-21, 25-23, 25-21) and Notre Dame (25-22, 26-24, 28-26).
Mylah Vorst led the offense with 12 kills against Perkins. Laynie Meadows added six terminations and 10 digs. Lucy Boos nearly had a double-double, finishing with 24 assists and eight digs. Calli Conley added 11 digs and five aces. Kennedy Falkenberg produced 10 digs and five terminations, and Gabby Cathers had two aces.
Vorst led the Flyers against Notre Dame with 16 kills, while Falkenberg (9), Caity Extine (7), and Meadows (6) combined for 22 more. Meadows added a team-best 15 digs, while Falkenberg (12), Conley (12), and Boos (11) all had double-digits, as well. Boos led the team with 35 assists, and Conley added five.
Northwood (1-0) won its season opener in straight sets against North Baltimore (25-12, 25-10, 25-10). Stats weren’t reported.
Oak Harbor (0-2) dropped both of its matches in a tri-meet at Bellevue, falling in two sets to Gibsonburg (25-17, 25-9) and Bellevue (25-13, 25-17). Stats weren’t reported.
Woodmore (0-1) fell to Genoa (25-18, 27-25, 25-15) in its season opener. Stats weren’t reported.
Waite (1-1) earned a four-set win over Put-in-Bay in head coach Aerika Blankenship’s debut before falling on the road against Vanlue (25-14, 25-22, 25-9). Stats weren’t reported for either match.
