Oak Harbor opened its season with a 3-2 win over Wauseon on Aug. 14, registering victories at second singles and both doubles pairs.
Chelsea Meckfessel produced the win at second singles, defeating Lexi Short 6-4, 6-4 for her first varsity victory. The first doubles pair of Sam Benner and Brooklyn Garcia triumphed over Presley Ziegler and Briza Cortez 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. At second doubles, the tandem of Ava Sautter and Taylor Gluth knocked off Skylar Hovis and Carly Dobaczewski 6-4, 6-1.
In the other two matches, Wauseon’s Laney Zietek defeated Oak Harbor’s Dakota Gluth 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 at first singles, while Gracie Reebel fell to Wauseon’s Lilly Leija 6-4, 6-1 at third singles.
Clay, meanwhile, opened its season against Maumee Valley (L, 3-2) on Aug. 10 and state powerhouse Anthony Wayne (L, 5-0) on Aug. 13.
Against Maumee Valley, Kaydance Sutter produced a win at second singles, 7-5, 6-3. The freshmen duo of Kenna Brummel and Jaylee Medina earned the victory at second doubles 2-6, 6-1, 10-5.
Elizabeth Kinn and Xylah Beauregard both fell 6-1, 6-0 in first and third singles, respectively. The senior pair of Addison Ziegelhofer and Abigail Lewis also went to a tiebreaker before falling 6-3, 3-6, 11-9 in first doubles.
Against the Generals, which have advanced to the state semifinals in three of the past four years, Ellie Haynes, Beauregard, and Ziegelhofer fell in singles. Ziegelhofer was the lone member of the trio to claim a game, which came in the first set. Anthony Wayne also cruised in doubles by knocking off Kinn and Sutter 6-0, 6-1 and Lewis and Brienna Muchewicz 6-1, 6-0.
Oak Harbor and Clay were scheduled for meet Aug. 17. Those results will be in next week’s roundup.
