Prep baseball roundup: League play gets underway for area teams

LAKE (7-3, 2-0 NBC) won three of its four games during the week, topping Oak Harbor 11-4 and Fostoria 11-1 (5 inn.) to open league play, while also falling to Woodmore 7-6 and defeating Lima Senior 15-1 (5 inn.) in non-league play.

The Flyers rallied from down four through two innings to produce the win over Oak Harbor. Eight different players recorded a hit, while Thomas Oehlers (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI, BB) and Riley Lawniczak (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI) had multi-hit outings. Gavin Kolhofer went 1-for-2 with two runs, four walks, and a double from the leadoff spot, while Jack Sobczak had a pair of RBIs. Jace Ayers, Zach Blandin, and Jaxson Rymers also drew two walks each as Lake totaled 13 as a team. Sobczak earned the complete game win, allowing six hits and one walk with five strikeouts.

Lake had a reversal of fortune against Woodmore, jumping out to a 6-1 lead through three and a half innings before giving up six unanswered runs to close out a loss. Oehlers (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI), Sobczak (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI), and Grady Snoderly (2-for-3, RBI, BB) combined for six of the team’s 11 hits.

Snoderly’s big game helped Lake top Fostoria as the first baseman went 2-for-4 with two runs, a double, a home run, and five RBIs. Lawniczak added a 3-for-4, one run, one RBI outing. Oehlers added a triple and an RBI. Snoderly also picked up the win on the mound, tossing four innings and allowing three hits and a walk while striking out four. Sobczak struck out three in a clean fifth.

Mason Csortos went four innings and allowed just two hits and one unearned run while striking out six to earn the win against Lima Senior. Kohlhofer (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB) and Snoderly (2-for-2, 2 R, BB, RBI, 3B) had multi-hit games, while Sobczak had three RBIs and Oehlers was 1-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs, one walk, and a double.

WOODMORE (7-5, 3-2 SBC) picked up three victories to push its winning streak to four, defeating St. Joseph Central Catholic 12-1 in six innings, Lake 7-6, and Gibsonburg 11-1 in six innings.

While he didn’t reach the innings minimum to earn the win, Michael Seeger started and went the first 2.1 innings while striking out one against SJCC. Mason McGee, who earned the win, and Calvin Lipstraw each struck out two in relief. Offensively, the trio of Cole Potridge (2-for-3, 3 R, RBI, BB, 3B), Griffin Thomas (2-for-3, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB), and Blane Overmeyer (2-for-4, RBI) had multi-hit games. Calvin Lipstraw went 1-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs, and a double. McGee added an RBI, as well.

Potridge’s sacrifice fly tied the game against Lake at six in the sixth, and McGee scored the winning run on an error as the Wildcats walked off the Flyers. Seeger (2-for-3, R, 2 RBI, BB, 3B), Potridge (2-for-3, R, RBI), and Keil Almroth (2-for-4) had multi-hit games offensively. It was Almroth who also picked up the win in relief, striking out a pair in the top of the seventh. Overmeyer struck out one while allowing one hit and one walk in 2.1 innings of relief.

Woodmore finished its week with a league win over Gibsonburg in which eight of the nine batters in the lineup tallied at least one hit as the Wildcats scored eight runs over the final two innings. The duo of Lipstraw (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI, 2B) and Seeger (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI) had multiple hits. Thomas went 1-for-3 with two RBIs and one run, while Perkins (1-for-3, 2 R, BB, 3B) and Potridge (1-for-4, HR) also contributed. Almroth earned his second win in as many games, striking out 12 while allowing four hits, one unearned run, and one walk over six complete.

CLAY (6-4, 3-1 NLL) had a strong week, sweeping Napoleon 11-0 in five and 8-0 before a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Perrysburg.

While Bryce Besgrove was striking out 12 and allowing just one hit and three walks over five complete to earn the win on the mound, Darin Fussell went 2-for-2 with two runs, five RBIs, and one home run offensively. Alex Goetz (1-for-1, 3 R, 2 BB, 3B0, Landon Echelberry (1-for-2, 2 R, RBI, BB, 2B), and Brayden Toneff (1-for-2, R, RBI) also contributed hits.

Fussell took his turn striking out 12 in the finale against Napoleon, allowing just two hits over seven frames. Offensively, the group of Echelberry (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI), Besgrove (2-for-3, R, RBI), Toneff (2-for-2, R, 2 RBI), and Carter Walendzak (2-for-3, R, RBI, BB) had multi-hit games. Dane Fussell added one hit and one run, and Aiden Berryman did the same, while Chase Vriezelaar went 1-for-2 with two runs and a walk.

The Eagles walked off Perrysburg in the seventh on Darin Fussell’s RBI single that scored Echelberry, who had singled with two outs and nobody on before stealing second. Echelberry also earned the complete game win on the mound, striking out 11 while allowing five hits and one run. He finished 2-for-3 at the plate with his walk and game-winning run, while Besgrove (2-for-3, BB), Berryman (2-for-3, R), Brannan Vargas (1-for-3), Fussell (1-for-3, 2 RBI), and Goetz (1-for-4) also contributed.

GENOA (4-4, 1-2 NBC) opened its week with a 19-1 league win in five innings over Rossford before dropping league contests against Maumee (9-0) and Otsego (7-2).

Jaxon Magnone went 3-for-4 with four runs, two triples, and five RBIs in the win over Rossford, while David Nissen was 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs. Evan Millner had three hits over four at bats with two RBIs, one run, and a double. Brock Mathews started and pitched the first two innings and struck out three, but didn’t earn the win after not reaching the innings threshold. Elijah Welling went the next two frames, earning the win after striking out five and allowing one hit and one walk. Vince Pasty, who scored three runs and stole four bases, pitched the fifth and struck out a pair.

The loss to Maumee saw Genoa compile two hits as a team, one from Welling and another from Pasty. Hunter Bickel also walked once and stole a base.

The Comets had seven hits against Otsego, led by Noah Suckle’s 2-for-3, one run, one RBI outing. Mathews, Preston Maher, Bickel, Millner, and Welling also had hits.

GIBSONBURG (5-5, 1-3 SBC) split a pair of league games on the week, topping Northwood 12-1 in five innings and falling to Woodmore 11-1 in six innings.

Chuy Rodriguez, who recently signed to play college baseball at Heidelberg, earned the win against Northwood by striking out three and allowing just two hits and a walk over three innings. Reece Walby, who struck out three over the final two innings, went 2-for-3 with three runs and a pair of RBIs, including a home run. Rodriguez added two runs and two RBIs, while Evan Hoover scored twice.

In the loss to Woodmore, Walby (2-for-3, R, 2B) had two of the team’s four hits.

OAK HARBOR (4-5, 1-1 NBC) opened its week with losses to Lake (11-4) and Lakota (13-7), but finished strong with a 14-4 win over Eastwood in five innings.

The Rockets jumped out to a 4-0 lead against Lake, and trailed just 6-4 entering the seventh, but the Flyers put the game away with five in the seventh. Bryar Myerholtz (2-for-3, R) and Fischer Conn (2-for-3, R) had multi-hit games. Nolan Bickelhaupt had a solo home run, while Brennan Butzin went 1-for-2 with one run, a double, one RBI, and a walk. Ethan Johnson was 1-for-2 with an RBI, a hit by pitch, and a stolen base.

Despite strong performances from Cooper Schultz (3-for-5, 3 R, RBI, 2B, 3B) and Bickelhaupt (3-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, HR) from the 1-2 spots in the lineup, the Rockets fell to Lakota. Garret Perkins added one hit and drove in a pair, while Conn and Hunter Branum each had one double.

Butzin earned the win on the mound against Eastwood, striking out six while allowing five hits, four runs, and one walk over four frames. Schultz struck out one in the fifth. Alex Rife went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, one run, and one walk to lead of offense. Schultz (2-for-4, 3 R, 2 SB), Bickelhaupt (2-for-3, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 3 SB), and Remington Balboa (2-for-3, 2 R) each added multi-hit games. Perkins walked twice and scored twice, as did Johnson.

CARDINAL STRITCH (4-5, 1-1 TAAC) dropped a pair of games during the week, falling 12-5 to Emmanuel Christian in a league contest before falling 13-9 in a non-league outing against Rossford.

Angelo Nino went 2-for-4 with one run to lead the Cardinals against Emmanuel Christian, while Michael Rosales, Brayden Minnick, and Shawn Weatherford had one hit each. Minnick and Weatherford, along with Cameron Martin, combined for the team’s three RBIs. Simon Ross struck out six over four innings on the mound.

David Crook’s big game, which included a 2-for-3 performance with two runs, a double, a triple, a walk, and five RBIs, wasn’t enough to get the win against Rossford. Rosales (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI) and Nino (2-for-3, 2 R, BB) each had multi-hit games, while Weatherford doubled and drove in a run.

EASTWOOD (3-5-1, 0-2 NBC) dropped a pair of league games to Otsego (9-0) and Oak Harbor (14-4, 5 inn.) during the week.

The group of Cam Schumaker, Drew Luidhardt, Jack Sensenig, Erich Hepler, and Easton Speck had one hit apiece for Eastwood against Otsego, while Speck drew the team’s lone walk. Schumaker tossed three scoreless, hitless innings in relief. He walked three and struck out three, as well.

Tanner Jensen went 2-for-2 with two runs and a hit by pitch to lead the Eagles offensively against Oak Harbor. Schumaker added a hit and an RBI, Luidhardt went 1-for-3 with a stolen base, Andy Lautzenheiser scored once and drew a walk, Hepler had one hit, and Speck had one hit, one RBI, and one walk.

NORTHWOOD (0-7, 0-3 SBC) suffered a pair of losses to Gibsonburg, 12-1 in five innings and St. Mary Central Catholic, 8-6.

Gabe Hicks went 1-for-2 with a double and one run from the leadoff spot for the Rangers against Gibsonburg, while Jay Zaborski batted 1-for-2 with a double. Mason Hurley added one RBI. Hurley allowed just one earned run and struck out three over 2.1 innings in relief.

SMCC scored twice in the sixth to break a 6-6 tie in the week’s finale. Zaborski (2-for-4, R) and Alex Hagemann (2-for-3, RBI) had multiple hit games. Hicks (1-for-2, R, 2 BB), Hurley (1-for-3, 2 RBI), Bryceson Laurell (R, RBI, BB), Jayden Zuraski (R, 2 BB), and Evan Rodriguez (R, RBI, 2 BB) also contributed.

WAITE (0-2) fell to Woodward 24-14 in its lone game. No results or stats were reported.
