Prep baseball roundup: Clay rolls as pitching dominates; Lake, Oak Harbor, Woodmore win 7 of 10 combined

CLAY (9-4, 6-1 NLL) won all three games during the week, pushing its winning streak to four straight overall with a sweep of Fremont Ross (10-0 in 6 innings, 5-0) and an NLL non-division win over Northview 7-4 in 10 innings.

Bryce Besgrove was dominant on the mound, registering 13 strikeouts over six complete while allowing just one hit and one walk in the opener against Fremont Ross. He also paced the offense with a 2-for-4 outing that included three RBIs, two runs, and three stolen bases. Chase Vriezelaar (3-for-3, R, SB) led the team in hits, while Landon Echelberry (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3B) and Darin Fussell (2-for-4, 2 RBI, R, SB) produced multi-hit outings. Alex Goetz scored three runs and stole three bases from the leadoff spot.

Fussell took his turn on the mound in the finale against Fremont Ross, producing 10 strikeouts and allowing only three hits and one walk over seven complete. He added a 1-for-2 performance offensively that included two walks, two stolen bases, and one run. Several Eagles recorded one hit apiece, while Vriezelaar and Echelberry had the team’s two RBIs. Brannan Vargas tied Fussell for the team-high with two walks, and Echelberry swiped a pair of bases.

Echelberry’s two-run double in the 10th inning drove in the winning runs for Clay against Northview, while Besgrove added an insurance run with an RBI double in the next at bat. Goetz (3-for-6, 2 R, RBI, 2B), Besgrove (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 BB, SB, 3 2B), Vriezelaar (3-for-4, R, BB), and Max Morrison (3-for-5) all had three-hit performances, while Echelberry also finished with two runs, two RBIs, one walk, and a double.

LAKE (10-4, 4-1 NBC) won three of four games over the week, topping Genoa 4-2 and Rossford 15-0 in five innings in league play, while also falling to Maumee 2-1 in eight innings in league play. They also topped Swanton 4-2.

Jack Sobczak earned a complete game victory while striking out seven in the win over Genoa, while also adding a 1-for-3, one-RBI performance offensively. Jace Ayers added two walks and one run, while Thomas Oehlers was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Kaiden Cousino had two runs and two walks, while Jaxson Rymers also had one run and one walk.

Grady Snoderly took his turn in producing a complete game victory against Swanton, striking out three and allowing just one earned run. Ayers (2-for-4, R) and Riley Lawniczak (2-for-4) had multi-hit games. Cousino, Mason Csortos, and Gavin Kohlhofer had two walks apiece.

Lake took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning against Maumee, but had a runner thrown out trying to advance to third on the same play with one out. It came back to hurt them as Maumee tied it in the seventh before walking off the Flyers in the eighth. Sobczak struck out five and allowed six hits over seven innings, while Charles Wallace took the loss despite not allowing an earned run. The Flyers had nine hits offensively, including two apiece from Snoderly (2-for-4), Lawniczak (2-for-2, BB), and Csortos (2-for-4, RBI).

Lake concluded its week with a big win over Rossford. Snoderly led the team offensively with a 3-for-4 performance with three runs. Ayers (2-for-4, 2 RBI, R), Lawniczak (1-for-2, 2 R, RBI, BB), Csortos (1-for-3, 2 R, RBI, BB), and Kohlhofer (1-for-2, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB) also contributed. Csortos got the win on the mound, striking out four of four. Rymers pitched the fifth, walking one and striking out one.

WOODMORE (9-6, 5-2 SBC) won two of three games, knocking off Old Fort 11-1 in five innings and Northwood 10-9 in eight innings. They also lost to Ottawa Hills 8-2.

Michael Seeger earned the win on the mound against Old Fort, striking out six over three frames. Keegan Strong and Mason McGee each pitched an inning in relief. Ryne Donley led the Wildcats with three hits, and Keil Almroth added two more. Cole Potridge knocked in a pair, and Seeger added two hits, including one triple, and two RBIs while adding three runs. Collin Perkins registered three runs scored.

Almroth took the tough luck loss against Ottawa Hills, giving up just one earned run over five innings while striking out seven. Gavin Donley led the offense with a 2-for-3, two-run outing, while Almroth, Blane Overmeyer, Potridge, and Calvin Lipstraw added one hit apiece.

Perkins had a leadoff single, stole second, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored the game-winning run against Northwood on a sacrifice fly from Seeger in the eighth inning. The Wildcats racked up 11 hits, including multi-hit performances from Mason McGee (3-for-4, 2B, 2 R, RBI), Gavin Donley (2-for-4, 3B, R, 2 RBI), Seeger (2-for-2, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB), and Perkins (2-for-5, 2 R). Five players pitched for Woodmore, highlighted by Overmeyer, who picked up the win with 3.1 innings of two-hit, five-strikeout, scoreless relief.

OAK HARBOR (6-6, 3-2 NBC) went 2-1 against league competition, defeating Fostoria 12-1 in five innings and Otsego 8-1 in six innings after falling to Maumee 6-5.

Oak Harbor scored five runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-2 lead, but the host Panthers rallied for four runs in a walk-off victory. Oak Harbor was led at the plate by Garret Perkins, who went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and one double, and Bryar Myerholtz, who went 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Cooper Schultz and Nolan Bickelhaupt each scored twice.

A seven-run second inning propelled the Rockets against Fostoria, who saw Ethan Johnson pick up the win after striking out seven over three innings. Remington Balboa added two innings of scoreless relief. Bickelhaupt led the offense with a 3-for-4 outing that included three RBIs, two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Schultz (2-for-4, R, RBI), Fischer Conn (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI) and Balboa (2-for-2, 2 RBI, R) added multi-hit games, and Fulton Krupp went 1-for-1 with two runs, two RBIs, and two walks.

A fast start occurred once again against Otsego as the Rockets reeled off six runs in the first three frames while racking up 11 hits as a team. Schultz (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI, SB), Bickelhaupt (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI), Perkins (2-for-4, R, RBI), and Conn (2-for-3, R) led the way with multi-hit games. Alex Rife had two RBIs, while Johnson and Brennan Butzin each had one hit, one RBI, and one walk. Myerholtz had two walks.

GENOA (6-6, 2-4 NBC) split four games last week, defeating Eastwood 9-3 in league play and Bluffton 14-1 in six innings in non-league play, while falling to Lake 4-2 and Fostoria 7-4 within the league.

Jaxon Magnone had a solid all-around performance for Genoa against Lake, striking out six over six innings while allowing only three earned runs. He also went 2-for-3 at the plate with two stolen bases, a hit by pitch, and an RBI. Evan Millner added a 2-for-4 performance with one RBI.

Elijah Welling (3-for-3, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 SB, 2B) and Noah Suckle (3-for-4, 2 RBI, R, SB) paced the offense in the win over Eastwood, while Magnone (2-for-4, 2 R, SB) and Millner (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI, BB, 3B) added multi-hit games. Brock Mathews got the win on the mound, striking out eight over six innings. Joel Gittus struck out three in one inning of relief.

Welling went 3-for-4 with two runs, one RBI, and two stolen bases in the loss to Fostoria. Magnone added one hit, one run, one RBI, and one stolen base. Gittus struck out one in 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.

The Comets racked up 15 hits against Bluffton, led by Millner (3-for-5, 2 R, RBI, 2 3B, SB) and David Nissen (3-for-4, R, RBI). Hunter Reed (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI, BB, 2B) and Suckle (2-for-5, 2 R, RBI, 2B, SB) added multi-hit attacks, while every other player in the lineup had at least one hit, including three-RBI performances from Magnone and Preston Maher. As a team, Genoa had four doubles, two triples, and a Magnone home run.

GIBSONBURG (6-6, 2-4 SBC) was limited to just two games because of weather, falling 15-3 to Tiffin Calvert in five innings before adding a 7-1 win over St. Mary Central Catholic.

In the loss to Tiffin Calvert, Reece Walby had a pair of hits, two runs, and one walk, while Chuy Rodriguez had two RBIs.

Rodriguez produced the win on the mound against SMCC by striking out 12 batters over seven complete. The one run he allowed was unearned, and SMCC had just two hits against him. Luke Foster (3-for-4, RBI, 3B) added three hits, while Tristan Pacak (2-for-3, 3 RBI, R) and Rodriguez (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI) had two apiece. Aiden Morant added one double, two runs, and one stolen base. Walby (1-for-3, 2 R) had a pair of steals.

EASTWOOD (5-6-1, 2-3 NBC) had three games, all in league play, while producing five-inning wins over Fostoria 15-2 and Rossford 13-1, along with a 9-3 loss to Genoa.

The Eagles pounced on Fostoria with six runs in the first and fourth innings. While accumulating 10 hits as a team, the trio of Drew Luidhardt (2-for-2, 3 R, 2 RBI, BB, 2B, 2 SB), Jack Sensenig (2-for-3, 2 R), and Erich Hepler (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI, SB) had multi-hit games. Brady Ramlow added two RBIs while finishing 1-for-3 with a run. Easton Speck added a pair of RBIs, while Tanner Jensen had two runs and a double. Cam Schumaker went the distance on the mound, striking out one while allowing three hits over five frames.

The host Comets handed Eastwood a loss by breaking open a close game through four with five combined in the fifth and sixth innings. Speck had two hits in three at bats, while Schumaker, Sensenig, and Andy Lautzenheiser had one hit apiece. In fact, Lautzenheiser’s came on a solo home run.

The Eagles closed the week with a strong win over Rossford that featured two-hit performances from Luidhardt (2-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B), Ramlow (2-for-3, 3 R, 3 RBI, BB, 2B, 2 SB), Lautzenheiser (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, 3B, SB), and Hepler (2-for-3, 2 RBI, R, 2B, SB). Schumaker scored three runs and swiped a pair of bags, while Jensen walked twice, drove in one, scored once, and stole two bases.

CARDINAL STRITCH (4-6, 1-2 TAAC) was limited to one game, falling to Ottawa Hills 20-1 in five innings. Angelo Nino (1-for-2), Simon Ross (1-for-1, BB, SB), and Brayden Minnick (1-for-1) combined for the team’s three hits. Jayce Contreras added three stolen bases, one run, and one walk. Shawn Weatherford pitched one scoreless inning in relief, striking out one.

NORTHWOOD (1-9, 0-4 SBC) produced its first win with a 21-0, five-inning rout of Rogers, while falling 10-0 to Hopewell-Loudon and 10-9 to Woodmore in an eight-inning heartbreaker.

Gabe Hicks and Mason Hurley had one hit apiece against Hopewell-Loudon, while Hicks and Jaxon Marlowe had one walk apiece. Ryan Kovacs struck out three over two innings of relief without allowing an earned run.

The Rangers racked up 11 hits as a team with several big performances against Rogers. Brett Reichow went 4-for-5 with five RBIs, four runs, two triples, and two stolen bases to lead the way. Nobody else had more than one hit, but Hicks (1-for-3, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB, 3 SB), Hurley (1-for-2, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, 2 SB), Bryceson Laurell (3 R, BB, SB), Kovacs (RBI, BB), Jayden Zuraski (1-for-3, 3 R, 2 RBI, SB), Ethan Leonard (1-for-3, 2 R, BB, 2B), Alex Hagemann (1-for-2, R, RBI, 3 BB, 2B, 2 SB), and Marlowe (1-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, SB) all contributed. Hicks earned the win on the mound, striking out five over four scoreless while allowing just one hit and one walk. Reichow struck out one in a 1-2-3 fifth.

Northwood rallied with six runs in the fifth inning to ultimately force extra innings against Woodmore, but the visitors scored once in the top of the eighth to produce the win. Leonard (2-for-3, RBI, BB) was the lone Ranger with two hits, but Hicks, Laurell, and Jay Zaborski had two RBIs each. Reichow (1-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB, SB) also contributed, as did Evan Rodriguez (1-for-3, R, RBI, BB). Kovacs was solid in relief despite taking the loss, striking out two while allowing two hits and two walks over three innings.

WAITE (0-5, 0-2 CITY LEAGUE) had a tough week, falling to Bowsher twice (20-0, 23-0) and McComb once (27-0). Stats weren’t reported.
