Prep baseball roundup: Clay rolls once again, pushing its win streak to 10 straight

CLAY (13-4, 9-1 NLL) continued to roll, sweeping Bowling Green 10-0 and 15-4 in an NLL doubleheader, taking down St. John’s in a tough non-conference tilt, and posting a 4-0 shutout over Findlay to conclude the week to push its winning streak to 10.

Darin Fussell picked up the win in the opener against BG, tossing four innings and striking out three. Jayce Derr walked one in a scoreless fifth. Offensively, Fussell had a team-high three hits along with two RBIs and a run. Alex Goetz (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3B), Landon Echelberry (2-for-2, 2 R, 2 RBI, BB, 2B), Max Morrison (2-for-3, R), and Aiden Berryman (2-for-3, 2 R) all added multi-hit efforts. Chase Vriezelaar drove in a pair.

Echelberry led the Eagles in the second game against BG, delivering a two-run blast two batters into the contest en route to a 2-for-3, two-run, four-RBI outing. Berryman finished 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, while Goetz (2-for-2, 2 R, BB) and Brannan Vargas (2-for-3, 2 2B, 2 R, RBI) added multi-hit games. Bryce Besgrove struck out seven in a dominant three innings to pick up the win. Morrison pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

The Eagles returned home to pick up a big win over St. John’s in which Besgrove went 1-for-2 with two runs, one RBI and two walks. Fussell (2-for-4, R, 2B) and Vargas (2-for-2, 2 RBI, BB) had multi-hit games. Vriezelaar (1-for-2, 2 RBI, BB), Brayden Toneff (1-for-2, 2 R, 2 BB), and Goetz (1-for-4, R, 2B) also contributed. Derr earned the win with 4.2 innings of work and five strikeouts. Morrison earned the save, striking out two over the final 2.1 frames.

Echelberry concluded the week with a complete game shutout victory against Findlay, which included nine strikeouts. Goetz (1-for-3, 2 RBI) led the offense, while Besgrove (1-for-3, 3B, R) and Toneff (1-for-1, HBP, R, BB) added hits.

LAKE (11-5, 4-2 NBC) split a pair of games, defeating Northwood 11-1 in five innings before falling 2-1 to Oak Harbor in an NBC matchup.

Jaxson Rymers earned the win against Northwood, striking out five over four innings while allowing one hit and two walks. Offensively, the Flyers racked up 13 hits, including multi-hit games from Gavin Kohlhofer (2-for-4, 2 R, RBI, 2 SB), Riley Lawniczak (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 SB), Grady Snoderly (2-for-2, 2 R, RBI, 2B, SB), Jace Ayers (2-for-3, 3 RBI, R, SB), and Blake Salley (2-for-3, R, RBI). Jack Sobczak also finished 1-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs.

The Flyers lost a hard-fought battle with Oak Harbor despite a complete game effort from Sobczak, who struck out one while allowing six hits and three walks over seven. Lake had four hits, including one apiece from Kohlhofer (1-for-2, 2 BB, R), Sobczak, Ayers, and Mason Csortos. They also drew seven walks.

OAK HARBOR (11-6, 7-2 NBC) had a perfect week, beginning with a 4-2 win over Genoa. They took down Woodmore 13-1 in five innings and then produced a key 2-1 league win over Lake. Following that, the Rockets swept Rossford on the road, 11-0 in five innings and 7-2.

Cooper Schultz earned the win on the mound in the week’s opener against Genoa, allowing just two runs over 5.1 innings. Brennan Butzin finished it out, striking out three to earn the win. Schultz (2-for-2, 2 R, 2B) led the offense. Nolan Bickelhaupt (1-for-3, 2 R, SB) also contributed.

Ethan Johnson delivered a complete game victory against Woodmore, striking out one over five. Schultz (2-for-3, R, 3 RBI, BB), Bickelhaupt (3-for-4, 2 R, RBI, 2B, SB), Garret Perkins (1-for-2, 2 RBI, R, BB), Alex Rife (1-for-3, R, RBI), Butzin (1-for-3, 3 RBI, 2 R, BB), Fischer Conn (1-for-2, 2 R, BB), and Remington Balboa (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 2 R, SB) also contributed offensively.

Bickelhaupt struck out 10 over 5.1 innings in the win over Lake. Butzin earned the save by striking out three in relief. Schultz (2-for-4, RBI) and Conn (2-for-3, R) led the offense.

The Rockets were led by Schultz (2-for-4, 4 RBI, R, 2B) in the first game against Rossford. Lane Tack (1-for-3, 2 R, BB), Butzin (1-for-2, R, RBI), and Conn (1-for-2, 2 RBI, BB, R) also stood out, while Johnson and Balboa scored twice apiece. Johnson struck out four over five complete to earn the win.

Schultz went 3-for-4 with two runs and four stolen bases in the second game against Rossford. Perkins (2-for-4, RBI) added a multi-hit game, and Butzin (1-for-2, 2 RBI, R, BB) also played a key role. Gus Hartman and Bryar Myerholtz also had one RBI apiece. Balboa earned the win, striking out two over five innings. Myerholtz struck out four over two innings of relief.

WOODMORE (11-7, 7-2 SBC) won two of its three games, while having its game against St. Mary Central Catholic suspended in the 10th in a 7-7 tie. The Wildcats opened the week with a 7-6 win in nine innings over Danbury. They fell to Oak Harbor, 13-1, in five innings before concluding the week with a 12-3 road win over Lakota.

Blane Overmeyer’s RBI single with two outs in the top of the ninth provided the winning run against Danbury. Cole Potridge (3-for-5, 3 R, RBI) led the offense, while four others recorded one hit apiece, including Overmeyer, Calvin Lipstraw (1-for-4, 2 R, BB), Ryne Donley, and Mason McGee. Michael Seeger struck out five over the first three innings. The combination of Lipstraw, Keil Almroth and Overmeyer held Danbury scoreless over the final 4.2 innings. Overmeyer earned the win.

A seven-run first inning doomed a Woodmore in the loss to Oak Harbor. Lipstraw went 2-for-2 with one run and a stolen base from the leadoff spot, while Seeger was 1-for-2 in the three-hole. Donley and McGee split the team’s two walks.

Almroth delivered a masterful performance against Lakota, allowing just seven hits and one walk with 10 strikeouts in a complete game victory over Lakota. Lipstraw (3-for-5, 4 RBI, 2 R), Almroth (3-for-5, 2 RBI, R), Potridge (1-for-5, R, RBI), Griffin Thomas (1-for-4, 2 RBI, R), Ryne Donley (2-for-4, RBI, R), McGee (1-for-4, R), and Gavin Donley (2-for-3, 3 R, RBI, BB) were also significant contributors.

GIBSONBURG (7-6, 3-5 SBC) split a pair of league games, falling to Danbury 16-4 in six innings before knocking off Old Fort 12-0 in five frames.

Reece Walby went 3-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a triple against Danbury. Chuy Rodriguez (1-for-3, 2 RBI, BB), Tristan Pacak (2 BB), Evan Hoover (R, BB), Aiden Morant (2 BB, R, SB) also contributed offensively. Rodriguez struck out six over three innings in which he didn’t allow an earned run. Walby also didn’t allow an earned run over 1.1 innings of relief. In fact, 12 of the 16 runs allowed were unearned.

In the outing against Old Fort, Walby finished 3-for-3 with a triple, three runs, an RBI, and a walk. Morant scored four times and drew one walk. Rodriguez (2-for-3, 3 RBI, R), Pacak (R, RBI, 2 BB), and Mason Hoffman (1-for-2, R, RBI, BB) also helped out. Walby produced the complete game win, striking out eight over five innings and allowing three hits.

GENOA (8-8, 3-5 NBC) finished 2-2 on the week. In league play, they registered an 18-1 win over Rossford in five innings and a 4-2 loss to Oak Harbor, while splitting a pair of non-league contests against SJCC (W, 11-4) and Archbold (L, 7-1).

In the week’s opener against Oak Harbor, Jax Magnone struck out six over six innings while finishing 1-for-3 offensively. Aaron Straka added the team’s lone multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Noah Suckle was 1-for-3 with a run from the cleanup spot.

A 12-run fourth inning highlighted an easy win over Rossford. Elijah Welling (2-for-2, 4 R, RBI, 2 BB), Evan Millner (1-for-2, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB), Suckle (2-for-2, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2 BB, David Nissen (3 RBI, R, BB), Straka (1-for-2, R, RBI, 2 BB), and Preston Maher (1-for-2, R, 2 RBI, 2 BB) all contributed offensively. Brock Mathews earned the complete game win, striking out three and allowing only three hits and a walk.

Suckle (3-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI), Millner (3-for-4, 3 R, 3 RBI), Welling (2-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB), Hunter Bickel (1-for-2, 2 RBI, R), Straka (1-for-2, R, RBI, BB), and Maher (2 R, 2 BB) highlighted the offense’s performance against SJCC. Madden Witt struck out five over five frames to earn the win. Joel Gittus and Maher combined for a scoreless last two innings.

Welling had Genoa’s lone hit against Archbold, which was a double, while Magnone scored the lone run. Miller drove in a run. Gittus tossed 3.1 scoreless innings in relief.

EASTWOOD (5-9-1, 2-5 NBC) had a tough week. The Eagles dropped league contests to Maumee (4-0) and Otsego (7-0), before falling in a non-league tilt to Sandusky Perkins (5-0).

Eastwood failed to produce a hit against Maumee, but the combination of Cam Schumaker, Drew Luidhardt, Andy Lautzenheiser, and Tanner Jensen split four walks. Erich Hepler didn’t allow an earned run over five innings while striking out four.

Schumaker and Lautzenheiser had the team’s two hits against Otsego, which included a double from Lautzenheiser. Landon Weemes also stole a base.

The Eagles concluded the week against Perkins in which Jensen went 2-for-2 with a hit by pitch. Brady Ramlow added a 1-for-3 performance, and Jack Sensenig drew the team’s lone walk.

CARDINAL STRITCH (4-8, 1-3 TAAC) dropped a pair of games, falling 10-0 to league foe Toledo Christian in five innings and losing 12-8 in a non-league game against Start.

The Cardinals’ lone hit against Toledo Christian came from David Crook, who went 1-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base.

Stritch responded with nine hits against Start, highlighted by Shawn Weatherford (1-for-3, 3 R, 2 BB, RBI), Angelo Nino (2-for-5, 2 R), Michael Rosales (2-for-5, 2B, 3 RBI), Simon Ross (1-for-3, R, RBI, 2 BB), Crook (1-for-3, 2 BB), and Jayce Contreras (1-for-1, R).

NORTHWOOD (2-12, 0-5 SBC) dropped its first three games of the week to SJCC (4-3), Lake (11-1, 5 innings), and Swanton (15-4) before closing with a 2-1 win over Toledo Christian.

Northwood’s rally in the seventh fell just short against SJCC. Jayden Zuraski (2-for-3, 2B, RBI) and Ethan Leonard (2-for-3, R) led the offense, while Brett Reichow was 1-for-3 with a run and a triple. Evan Rodriguez struck out two over six complete.

Gabe Hicks (1-for-3, R), Reichow (1-for-2), and Alex Hagemann (1-for-1, BB) combined for Northwood’s three hits against Lake.

Reichow (1-for-2, 2 R, BB), Zuraski (1-for-3, 2 RBI), and Leonard (1-for-1, R, 2 BB) led the offense against Swanton. Hagemann and Reichow each added a stolen base.

Mason Hurley’s complete game victory highlighted the win over Toledo Christian. He struck out three while allowing just four hits and three walks. Hurley, Zuraski, Bryceson Laurell, and Ryan Kovacs each had one hit. Marlowe drew a pair of walks and scored once.

WAITE (1-7, 1-3 CITY LEAGUE) split a pair of games against Rogers, winning 5-4 in the opener before falling 22-11 in the finale. They closed the week with a 16-1 loss to Erie Mason. Stats weren’t reported.
