EASTWOOD 40, KENTON 21
The Brayden’s and Brady’s helped lead Eastwood to a season-opening win as the Eagles outscored Kenton 21-0 in the third quarter to take control of the game.
Brayden Luidhardt, who debuted at quarterback in place of his injured brother, Drew, went 13-of-20 for 183 yards and a pair of touchdowns. On the ground, Brayden Brown rushed 19 times for 95 yards and three touchdowns, while Brady Ramlow had a pair of receptions for a team-best 72 yards.
Luidhardt spread the ball around, completing passes to seven different players. Edmund Opfer caught two of those for 31 yards and a score, while Landon Weems had a one-yard touchdown reception. Cam Schumaker added three catches for 38 yards, and Brown had 18 yards receiving. Mason Chaffee had the other reception.
Defensively, Landen Simon led Eastwood with 9.5 tackles, while Opfer added seven. Braden Dix had the team’s lone sack.
Kenton opened the game by taking an 8-0 lead, but Schumaker’s 84-yard kickoff return for a touchdown got the momentum back for the Eagles, who ultimately scored the game’s next 40 points.
OAK HARBOR 52, HURON 46 (OT)
Oak Harbor went on the road and won a thrilling overtime battle with Huron to open the season.
Blake Nickel’s four-yard rushing touchdown provided the winning score in overtime after Huron’s Landon Hohler scored with 23 seconds left in regulation to tie the game.
Oak Harbor held the game’s largest lead at 28-14 early in the third quarter when Micah Miller returned a kick for a 53-yard touchdown. The Rockets also led 34-22 after a Kason Marshall touchdown with 4:16 left in the third, but Huron outscored Oak Harbor 24-12 over the rest of regulation to force overtime.
Nickel led Oak Harbor with 29 carries for 232 yards on the ground. Travis Bouyer added 18 carries for 161 yards. Breydan Porath went 5-for-8 for 45 yards passing, while Wyatt Augsburger and Bouyer each had a pair of receptions.
Defensively, Bodee Miller had a team-best six tackles, while Nickel and Augsburger each had four.
WOODMORE 57, NORTH CENTRAL 0
Woodmore jumped out to a 50-0 lead at halftime to secure a season-opening win as the Wildcats had four players score multiple touchdowns.
Quarterback Calvin Lipstraw completed 4-of-7 passes for three touchdowns, including two to Wesley Kayser, who had three receptions for 79 yards. Landon Rich led the ground attack with eight carries for 73 yards and a pair of scores, while Michael Seeger had three carries for 29 yards and two scores. Seeger also added the team’s third receiving touchdown on a 23-yard strike.
Defensively, Kayser added a pair of interceptions.
GIBSONBURG 49, OTTAWA HILLS 7
Ottawa Hills struck first with a 70-yard touchdown pass, but Gibsonburg responded with three touchdowns in the first quarter while ultimately cruising to a season-opening win.
Grant Smith, who finished with 17 carries for 223 yards and three touchdowns, scored twice on the ground in the opening frame. Aiden Morant then caught a 63-yard touchdown strike from Reece Walby with 35 seconds left for a 22-7 lead after Smith ran the two-point try in.
Morant added a 36-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter before Walby and Aiden Nims added scores on the ground to give Gibsonburg a 42-7 lead at the half.
Smith added another touchdown in the second half, and Ottawa Hills scored the game’s final points with 5:15 left.
Aside from Smith, Nims (67), Morant (29) and Walby (24) rounded out the rushing yardage. Walby went 2-for-3 through the air for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Morant was the recipient of those two completions.
Defensively, Luke Foster had a team-best six tackles while Chuy Rodriguez (5), Morant (3) and Smith (3) added 11 combined.
WAPAKONETA 28, CLAY 7
Clay went on the road in their season debut, ultimately seeing Wapakoneta pull away late as critical mistakes ended important drives for the Eagles.
The Eagles trailed just 7-0 with 30 seconds to go in the first half, and they had a first-and-goal at Wapakoneta’s one-yard line. However, a bad snap turnover occurred, and Wapakoneta used the momentum to pick up the win.
Clay also had a 31-yard field goal attempt blocked late in the first quarter, which came moments after Wapakoneta had taken a 7-0 lead on an 87-yard touchdown pass.
After the fumble at the goal line, Wapakoneta scored three touchdowns in the third quarter.
Clay actually outgained Wapakoneta 288-279, which included a 176-138 advantage through the air.
Landon Echelberry finished 14-of-26 passing for 176 yards and a touchdown in his Clay debut. He connected with Collin Greenawalt on an 18-yard pass with 2:55 left in the game for his team’s lone score.
ARCHBOLD 33, GENOA 28
Archbold used a 12-7 advantage in the fourth quarter to win a tight battle against Genoa at Jim Firestone Field.
The Comets got a game-best 129 yards on the ground from Luke Clement, who toted the ball 19 times. Jaxon Magnone led the receiving corps with seven receptions, 96 yards and a touchdown. Myles Mollenhauer went 15-for-24 with 237 yards and four touchdowns at the QB spot.
All of Genoa’s scoring came through the air, where Ryan Routson (61), Gavin Grigson (33), Clement (26) and Zayden Dunn (21) combined for the rest of the receiving yardage. Routson led the Comets with two touchdowns, while Clement added the other.
Defensively, Logan Routson had a game-best 15 tackles, while Clement added eight. Alex Materni and Evan Millner each contributed seven, while Carter Miller had six.
NORTHWOOD 44, ROSSFORD 36
In our week one game of the week for The Press, Northwood’s Tyler Osley terrorized Rossford en route to a high-scoring victory.
The junior quarterback went 9-for-10 through the air for 244 yards and three touchdowns, while carrying the ball 18 times for 113 yards and a touchdown.
Jason St. Claire (51) and Jaymin Cannon (36) combined for 87 yards on the ground with one touchdown apiece.
The biggest recipient of Osley’s passing attack was Valyric Goings, who had 166 yards with three touchdowns. John Sawyer added three receptions for 47 yards.
Defensively, Cannon added 10 tackles and an interception, while Kevin O’Donnell had nine tackles, including one for loss and a sack. Landan Kidd and Ethan Leonard each chipped in eight tackles, including one for loss each.
LEIPSIC 56, LAKE 35
Multiple kick return touchdowns helped Leipsic topple Lake in the season opener despite a big game from Julian Rodriguez, who produced 303 yards combined offensively.
Rodriguez had 26 carries for 194 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, and he added five receptions for 109 yards and two touchdowns through the air.
Gavin Kohlhofer added five catches for 71 yards and a touchdown, and he finished as the team’s second leading rusher with 27 yards on a pair of carries. Jaxson Rymers led the team in receptions with six while racking up 37 yards. He added an interception, as well.
KJ Magers went 15-for-29 passing with 205 yards and two touchdowns.
ST. MARY CENTRAL CATHOLIC 43, STRITCH 0
In their eight-man debut, Cardinal Stritch took a tough loss.
Isaiah Ochmanek threw for 22 yards, while the backfield tandem of Jordan Johnson (23) and Michael Rosales (22) combined for 45 yards on 10 carries apiece. Kyle Martin caught a pair of passes for 19 yards, and Angelo Nino added the other four.
Defensively, Nino had a team-best nine tackles, while Johnson added 5.5. Remeer McMillian also had three.
ST. FRANCIS 64, WAITE 19
Despite a huge performance from Dayveon Holman, Waite fell in their season opener.
Holman had four catches for 261 yards with touchdown receptions of 99, 82 and 75 yards.
