Several area track and field athletes win district titles, qualify for regionals

Over the span of May 20-23, all 10 Press-area schools competed in their respective division’s district championship.

In Division II, the regional is at Lexington High School on Wednesday (5/27) and Friday (5/29). The Division III regional is being hosted by Piqua High School on Thursday (5/28) and Saturday (5/30). Division IV will be at Marion Harding High School on Wednesday (5/27) and Friday (5/29), while the Division V regional will be at Fostoria High School on Thursday (5/28) and Saturday (5/30).

DIVISION II

In a Division II district at Clay High School, Clay finished second on the boys side, while the girls were fourth. The Waite boys finished 10th, and the girls didn’t score any points.

The Eagles will send 10 athletes in seven events to regionals. In field events, Logan Davis and Jordan Williams finished 1-2 in pole vault. High jump was also successful for Clay with Derek Harmer (2nd) and Jarvis Gibbs (4th) qualifying. Cash Mahr finished fourth in discus. Brody Csizmar was third in the 400 meter, while Barack James ran 13.66 in the 110 hurdles to set a new personal record. In relays, the 4x200 (JJ Medina, Williams, Csizmar, James) and 4x400 (Williams, Csizmar, Jacob Stine, Kason Marshall) relay teams qualified with third and fourth-place finishes, respectively.

On the girls side, Emily Schultz (100 hurdles) and the 4x400 relay team of Grace Mittendorf, Audrey Miller, Olivia Muir, and Jaelyn Rowe won district championships. Schultz also qualified in the 300 hurdles with a runner-up finish, while the same four relay runners also finished fourth in the 4x200 to qualify in both events. Carly Miller (2nd) and Makena Brinkman (3rd) both made it through in pole vault. Ariana Bench also qualified in two events, finishing runner-up in both shot put and discus.

Waite had a pair of regional qualifiers, including Daveyon Holman, who set a new PR in finishing fourth in the 200 meter, while Dezmend Jackson’s new PR in the 400 meter was good for a runner-up finish. The girls didn’t have any regional qualifiers.

DIVISION III

In Division III action at Oak Harbor High School, Oak Harbor’s girls (third) and boys (fourth) were the highest finishers among area teams. Lake’s boys finished ninth, while the girls were 12th. Genoa’s girls finished eighth.

Oak Harbor’s boys team was hurt when Wyatt Augsburger, who won the district title in the 110 hurdles, pulled up in one of his relays and wasn’t able to compete in the rest of his events. Despite that, Colton Spencer set a PR in finishing runner-up in the 300 hurdles, while also finishing third in the 110 hurdles. Bodee Miller also moved on with a third-place finish in the 800 meter, while Ayden Gaskalla (pole vault) and Zavier Hess (long jump) finished third and fourth, respectively, in their events.

Individually, Abigail Coutcher qualified in three events for the Rockets, finishing second in the 100 hurdles, third in the 300 hurdles, and third in the long jump. The first two included a new PR. Alayna Hall’s fourth-place finishes in the shot put and discus also helped her move on. Olivia Cherry’s season-best in the 800 meter helped her win a district championship, while Gabs Niederhouse was fourth in the 200 meter. Kendall Gaines qualified with a third-place finish and a new PR in the 800 meter, and she is also a member of the 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams that moved on. In fact, the only Oak Harbor relay team that didn’t qualify for regionals was the 4x200 team, which finished fifth. The 4x100 relay team of Hayley Fallgren, Miyanna Gardner, Olivia May, and Cherry finished fourth. Additionally, the group of May, Fallgren, Gaines, and Cherry finished second in the 4x800 and fourth in the 4x400.

Isaac Romero claimed a district championship for Lake in the shot put, while Matt Nietz also qualified with a fourth-place finish. Nietz added a runner-up mark in the discus. On the girls side, the Flyers didn’t have anyone qualify for regionals, but the all-freshmen 4x800 relay team of Julia Swartz, Belle Tippey, Macey Maguire, and Kali Kos nearly did so before finishing fifth.

Genoa’s Lindsey Brown won district championships in both the 100 and 300 hurdles. Kyra Frasure also moved on to regionals with a third-place finish in pole vault and a fourth-place finish in the long jump.

DIVISION IV

In Division IV action at Fostoria High School, Eastwood’s girls won a district championship with 122 points, edging out Huron (117) for the crown. Woodmore’s girls checked in seventh overall. Meanwhile, Eastwood’s boys were third, while Northwood finished 13th. Genoa’s boys didn’t place in the team standings.

Lauren Schuerman, Josie Appelhans, and Camille Foos qualified for regionals in four events for Eastwood’s girls. A trio of freshmen that includes Ava Mazjun, Sophie Gillespie, and Gabby Provo qualified in three events.

Appelhans won four district championships, including the 100 and 200 meter races, and she was part of the 100 and 200 meter relay teams. Schuerman qualified for regionals in the 100 meter (fourth), 4x100 relay (first), 4x400 relay (third), and long jump (second). Foos won district titles in the 4x200 relay and high jump, and she finished third in the long jump and the 4x400 relay. Ava Mazjun finished fourth in the 400 meter and was a member of the 4x400 and 4x800 relays that finished third and fourth, respectively. Gillespie qualified in the 100 hurdles (fourth) and 300 hurdles (second) with new PRs in both, and she was a member of the 4x200 team that won the district crown. Provo was part of the 4x200 (first), 4x400 (third), and 4x800 relay teams (fourth). The 4x100 relay team also included Macie Bradley and Macy Shoemaker. The 4x800 team featured Brynn Sheets and Taylor Mangette. Two other regional qualifiers were Karissa Nelson, who finished runner-up with a new PR in the 100 hurdles, and Skylar Chrisman, who was fourth in the pole vault.

On the boys side, Eastwood saw Austin Miller (second) and Ben Buehler (third) qualify in the 400 and 800 meter races, respectively. Hunter Lauer earned a spot in discus (third) and shot put (fourth), while Cullen Shank (2nd) and Dylan Perkins (fourth) were among the top four in pole vault.

Just like the girls, all four relay teams on the boys side for Eastwood qualified for regionals. The 4x800 team of Henry Howard, Miller, Buehler, and Casen Henline finished runner-up. The 4x200 (Carsyn Jones, Zach Mullholand, Collin Brogan, Miller) and 4x400 (Mullholand, Brogan, Howard, and Miller) both finished third, while the 4x100 team of Brogan, Jones, Mullholand, and Trace Johnson was fourth.

Ariana Florio qualified for regionals in three events for Woodmore, which included a runner-up finish in the 200 meter, a third-place finish in the 100 meter, and being part of the 4x200 relay team that finished fourth. The other members of that team include Valerie Kerecz, Karli Heins, and Willow Lewis. The Wildcats also had their relays in the 4x400 (Heins, Addie Lowry, Wren Lewis, Willow Lewis) and 4x800 (Wren Lewis, Willow Lewis, Peyton Damschroder, Lowry) qualify with fourth and third-place results, respectively.

For Genoa, Sam Buehler qualified for regionals with a third-place finish in the 400 meter, while Braden Lesher made it with a fourth-place finish in the 1600 meter, which included a new PR. The 4x200 relay team, which consists of Colby Ralston, Isaac Schimmoeller, Buehler, and Luke Kimpson, finished fourth to earn a spot.

Gabe Lewin finished third in the pole vault for Northwood to advance to regionals.

DIVISION V

In Division V action at Gibsonburg High School, four Press-area schools (including six teams) competed, highlighted by a second-place team finish from Woodmore’s boys.

Landon Rich finished runner-up in the 100 meter and fourth in the 200 meter as part of four regional qualifying events for the senior. He was also a member of the district champion 4x100 team and the runner-up 4x200 team. Myles Byrd ran his way to a district title in the 800 meter, and Lucas Caldwell was third in the 400 meter. Adyn Smith (second) and Ryan Maynard (fourth) qualified for regionals in pole vault and shot put, respectively. The 4x100 team, in addition to Rich, included Caldwell, Auden Hemminger, and Smith. The 4x200 runner-up team has Hemminger, Caldwell, and Coleton Shaner. The 4x400 of Smith, Marcus Schroder, Shaner, and Byrd was runner-up, and the 4x800 team of Byrd, Shaner, David Kigar, and Schroder was third.

While the Stritch girls didn’t have any qualifiers, King Wilson Jr. had a dominant individual performance on the boys side for the Cardinals. He won district championships in the 100, 200, and 400 meter races, and he finished runner-up in the long jump. He helped the boys finish eighth overall.

Northwood’s girls finished tied for 16th as a team as they had a trio of individuals qualify for regionals. Kayla Schlegel was sixth in the 400 meter, Mya Calvillo was fourth with a new PR in the 300 hurdles, and Emily Reichow was third in the pole vault.

Gibsonburg’s boys finished fifth overall, while the girls were tied for 16th.

Tyler Hill (1600 meter) and James Sidell (300 hurdles) both finished fourth in their respective events with new PRs. Hunter Wasserman was the runner-up in both the shot put and discus, and the boys also had three relay teams (4x100, 4x200, and 4x800) qualify for regionals with fourth-place finishes. Grant Smith, Aiden Morant, Bryson Marinoff, and Nathaniel Chafin are members of the 100 relay. Morant, Marinovv, Aiden Nims, and Xander Zimmerman are part of the 200, and the group of Hill, Gabe McCrory, Isaiah Crispen, and Keaton Sheidler comprise the 800.

In the girls events, Jorja Flores earned a regional spot in the 3200 meter with a sixth-place finish, while Mckenzie Montgomery’s season-best performance in the pole vault won her a district title.
