STATE TRACK: Cherry nearly wins state in 800, highlighting Oak Harbor’s state performance

Olivia Cherry ran the second-fastest time in the entire state across all divisions in the 800-meter race at the Jesse Owens OHSAA State Track & Field Championships June 5-6, but she had the unfortunate luck of competing against the only person who had the better time. Her performance highlighted another successful campaign from the Oak Harbor track program, which also saw the conclusion to the prep careers of several standouts on both sides.

CHERRY NEARLY WINS STATE TITLE IN 800

Cherry established a school-record time of 2:09.25 in the 800-meter finals, narrowly missing a state title by finishing behind only Sophia Szolosi of Athens, who ran 0.43 seconds faster. Cherry also finished third in the event at state in 2025, and she’ll have another crack at a state title as a senior next year.

In the 4x100 relay, Oak Harbor’s team of Cherry, Gabs Neiderhouse, Miyanna Gardner and Olivia May missed the finals in heartbreaking fashion, finishing just one one-hundredth of a second back of the final spot. In doing so, however, their time of 49.42 tied the school record.

The 4x800 team of Cherry, May, Kendall Gaines and Hayley Fallgren failed to qualify for the finals, as well, but finished 10th in the state with a 9:41.91 time.

The 4x400 team, which also consisted of Cherry, May, Gaines and Fallgren, earned a spot on the podium with a time of 3:57.94, just a half-second behind Oakwood in fifth. It was the final race of Fallgren’s prep career.

In field event competition, Alayna Hall also capped her prep career with a 12th-place finish in the discus competition, throwing 113-03.

AUGSBURGER, MILLER LEAD BOYS AT STATE

Wyatt Augsburger capped an award-filled career with a ninth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing in 14.71. He finished on the podium in back-to-back seasons in the event, and he likely would have qualified for more state events had he not suffered an injury at districts. He was a three-event state qualifier in 2025.

Fellow senior Bodee Miller, who qualified for state in two events last year, capped his prep career with an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter race. Similar to Augsburger, he also earned back-to-back podium finishes in the event. He was sixth in 2025.

Those two completed a record-breaking career, which included a third-place team finish at the 2025 state championships. They were part of a squad that tallied the most points the program had scored at the state tournament, and it was their best finish since the 1940 and 1948 teams each finished second.
