Genoa wrestling head coach, Bob Bergman, is this year's winner of the Tim Gilmore Coach of the Year award, as voted by the South Shores Wrestling Officials Association.

“Coach Bergman and his staff constantly demonstrate a genuine enjoyment for wrestling, which is easily seen when they compete,” the release said. “Coach Bergman and his staff are a pleasure to have at an event. They show sportsmanship and respect toward officials, coaches and wrestlers. Their team is always competitive and their program creates a positive atmosphere for wrestling at all events.”

Bergman is in his 15th season as the head wrestling coach of Genoa High School. During that time, he has a 354-108 dual meet record, which includes winning the OHSAA Div. III dual meet state championships in 2018 and 2019. His teams have won 10 Northern Buckeye Conference Championships, seven sectional championships, two district championships and placed in the Top 10 six times at the individual state tournament.

The Comets won back to back state championships in 2018 and 2019 after finishing runner-up in 2017.

Coach Bergman has coached 63 individual conference champions, 51 state qualifiers, 32 state placers, and 15 state champions. In 2019, he was honored as the Ohio High School Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Coach of the Year.

Bergman is a 2008 graduate of Bowling Green State University, earning a bachelor's degree in middle childhood education. He earned a master’s degree in administration from BGSU in 2013.

The Tim Gilmore Coach of the Year award honors the former official who also spent a great deal of time coaching and as a state evaluator. It recognizes an area coach who shows dedication to wrestling, has positive interactions with officials, strives to become more knowledgeable of the rules, and promotes officiating though his/her team.
