The Genoa boys wrestling team captured its fourth consecutive Northern Buckeye Conference (NBC) championship on Feb. 21 at Lake High School in Millbury.
In fact, four Press-area teams comprised the top four finishers. After Genoa’s 237.5-point total, Eastwood finished second with 140 points, while Oak Harbor and Lake finished third and fourth with 125 and 104.5 points, respectively.
Genoa placed all 14 wrestlers in a program-record performance. Tournament champions included Ethan Powell (120), Scotty Fuller (126), Ethan Sizemore (132), Mikey Soto (144), Luke Clement (165), and Elijah Smith-Draper (215). Finishing as runners-up for the Comets were Tyler Abbey (157) and Darren Abbey (175). Third-place finishers included Kyra Frasure (106), Isaac Soto (150), and Giorgi Ichkiti (190).
Fourth place went to Marcos Mata (113), Christian Stokes (138), and Evan Millner (285).
Fuller, who won his fourth NBC championship, was voted NBC Wrestler of the Year for the second consecutive season. The team’s result marks Genoa’s 11th NBC team title in the past 14 years.
Eastwood, meanwhile, produced first place finishes from Gabe Brough (106), Hunter Meeker (113), and Trace Johnson (157). Logan McBride (138) finished second, while Aiden Lee (285), Jackson Vetter (126), and Landon Simon (175) finished third. Braylon Collins (150) came in fourth.
Oak Harbor had eight wrestlers place, including first-place finishes from Bryar Myerholtz (285) and Max Barr (190). Brady Ager placed second, while third place finishes were achieved by Brody Anderson (138), Cooper Thompson (132), Eric Diaz (157), and Gage Sandwisch (113). Spencer Schultz (144) finished fourth.
Lake also had eight wrestlers place, including a first-place finish from Gabriel Sarabia (175) and second place finishes from Lorent Snipes (190) and Brody Barton (132). Isaac Kamann (120) came in third, while Delfino Garcia (165), Everett Snipes (126), Landon Mikels (106), and Maxwell McNalley (215) placed fourth.
Fostoria (101.5), Rossford (65.5), Otsego (62), and Maumee (50) rounded out the team scores.
