Despite high expectations, Elayna Krupp answered the call.
The Oak Harbor native recently finished off a successful swimming career at Bowling Green State University, etching her name in the ranks of some of the greatest athletes to come out of the area.
Krupp, who recently graduated from BG and is set to continue her academic career there to obtain her master's degree in speech pathology and work in the pediatric field, reflected on her four years swimming for the Falcons.
"The last four years swimming at Bowling Green have been wonderful," Krupp said. "Swimming at the Division I level is intense, but I built relationships with teammates from all over the world that I will have for a lifetime."
Krupp, who also excelled at track and soccer in high school, swam the 50 freestyle, the 100 free, the 50 butterfly and 100 fly and some relays with the Falcons.
"My freshman year, I was a part of two relays that set school records,” she said. “My sophomore year, I placed in the top 16 individually in the 50 and 100 freestyle at the MAC Championships. This year, as a team, we managed to place sixth overall after placing last in our conference the year prior.
“The most valuable accomplishment we have had as a team is our ability to grow and adapt to all the changes we have had in the past four years. My teammates are the most valuable part of my collegiate swim career."
Krupp's best time in the 50 free was 23.35 seconds, and she had very impressive swims in the 100 free (51.14), 50 fly (25.55) and 100 fly (56.72). Three of those swims came at the MAC Championships, two in 2023, and one in 2022, a clear signal that Krupp saved her best for the biggest stage.
Krupp’s teammate in high school and in college, Alyse Sorg, had a successful freshman season at BG. The Graytown native appeared in 10 meets and competed in a bevy of events like the sprint freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and 200 individual medley.
Sorg saved her best for three events — the 50 free (25.29); the 50 fly (26.03); and the 100 backstroke (58.47) — in the MAC Championships.
The program appears to be in good hands under Tanner Barton, who just finished his first season leading the Falcons. He came to BG from John Carroll University in Cleveland, where he led the program for four years, and he also swam at Ball State University before that with success at both stops.
