Eastwood volleyball’s Mack Miller became just the second player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills on Sept. 16 in her team’s reverse sweep victory over Otsego.
And the junior outside hitter did it in spectacular fashion.
Miller joined former Eastwood and BGSU volleyball standout Katelyn Meyer as the only two players in program history to achieve the feat. She reached the milestone in the fourth set, and she also finished the match with a career-high 36 kills and 15 digs.
In doing so, she broke Meyer’s single-match record of 31 for terminations that she had tied Aug. 28 against Oak Harbor. She now potentially sets her sights on Meyer’s career record of 1,482 kills.
Meyer joined the club on Aug. 24, 2017 against Bowling Green High School at the start of her senior year, which means Miller is ahead of her pace.
Prior to this season, head coach Sarah Frank spoke of Miller’s leadership potential.
“Her game is so solid and there's still room to grow, but my goal for her is to better the people around her, focus on leadership, and allow us to be a more player-guided team — where players are constantly giving feedback, showing their own version of buy-in, and it's not always us coaches just directing, directing, directing,” Frank said. “A lot of the girls look to her as that voice of reason or that voice of what we can do next, how we can get better. I'm gonna expect a lot out of that for her.”
Leadership is also where Miller has excelled this year, as she has become the anchor to a team that is currently 10-2 overall and 7-0 in NBC play. Her play on Sept. 16 helped her Eagles remain undefeated in league play, and she helped her team hand Lake (10-2, 6-1) its lone league loss earlier this month. The two teams are set to clash again later this month.
Outside of Miller, Liv Riter had 53 assists and 22 digs for Eastwood in the win over Otsego, while Ivy Schrader tallied 17 kills, 14 digs and four aces. Stella Chlebowski added 20 digs.
