Clay boys wrestling wins NLL Cardinal title, girls place fourth

The Clay boys wrestling team produced 169.5 points to capture first place in the Northern Lakes League Championship at Napoleon High School on Feb. 21, while the girls wrestling team placed fourth overall.

Clay’s score on the boys side was 30 points better than Fremont Ross in second place, while Napoleon (127), Bowling Green (55), Springfield (33.5), and Southview (32) rounded out the order of finish.

Garrison Weisner (144) won the title in his weight class for the Eagles, while Ethan Ackerman (106), Gabe McNally (175), Carter Whaley (190), and Augie Lohmeyer (215) finished second. Hunter Lemon (113) and Landon Orth (138) each finished fourth, while Ethan Rivera (150) and Corey Pounders (157) won their fifth-place matches. Bennet Viers (285) finished sixth.

Weisner shared the NLL’s most valuable wrestler award with Napoleon’s George Eggers.

On the girls side, Fremont Ross (262.5) took home the title, while Findlay (146), Whitmer (122.5), Clay (100), and Napoleon (80) rounded out the top five.

NLL commissioner Richard Browne said he believes that the league is the first in Northwest Ohio to offer a championship in girls wrestling.

For the Eagles, Sophia Ackerman (100), Farra Gershon (130), Koren Stevens (145), and Reyna Blackmon (235) finished in third place. Amy Kanavel (120) and Olivia Taylor (135) finished in fourth place. Aria Grady (105) came in fifth, while CC Hendricks (115) and Violet Kowalka (125) finished sixth.
