Clay High School senior Garrison Weisner captured his school’s fourth all-time Ohio High School Athletic Association individual state wrestling championship with a 7-4 sudden victory in overtime over Massillon Perry’s Mason Rohr at 144 pounds on March 15 at The Ohio State University’s Schottenstein Center.
In addition to Garrison Weisner’s state championship performance, several other area wrestlers competed in Columbus.
The Genoa boys basketball team improved to 25-0 with a pair of hard-fought victories over Liberty-Benton (65-48) and Paulding (56-51) in Division V district tournament play.
The Genoa girls basketball team continued its postseason run with a 49-42 win over London High School in a Division IV regional semifinal on March 4, but ran into the undefeated defending state champion, Bellevue, in a 59-42 regional final loss on March 6. Both games were played at Bluffton University.
Several area teams had successful postseason openers as Lake, Gibsonburg, Clay, Cardinal Stritch, and Genoa all won sectional titles, while Waite was slated to open play in the district tournament.
For the first time since 1990 and only the second time in program history, the Genoa girls basketball team is headed to the regional tournament.
Andrew Schrauder’s overtime goal gave the Clay hockey team a 2-1 victory over Bowling Green in the district championship, helping the Eagles set up a third consecutive regional semifinal appearance against St. Francis on March 5.
Makenna Moritz, a junior for the Genoa High School girls basketball team, has been named the 2025-26 Northern Buckeye Conference Player of the Year, the conference announced on Feb. 16.
Gibsonburg’s Elly Evarts and Reece Walby were named the Sandusky Bay Conference’s River Division player of the year in girls and boys basketball.
The Woodmore boys wrestling team produced 203 points to easily top St. Mary C.C. (54.5) for the River Division title in the Sandusky Bay Conference Championship at Norwalk High School on Feb. 21.
The Genoa boys wrestling team captured its fourth consecutive Northern Buckeye Conference (NBC) championship on Feb. 21 at Lake High School in Millbury.
The Eastwood girls bowling team, behind Makenzie Grover’s 531, shot a 3,056 as a team to capture first place in the first-ever Northern Buckeye Conference Championship on Feb. 18 at Al-Mar Lanes in Bowling Green. On the flip side, the Eastwood boys took home third place.
The Clay boys wrestling team produced 169.5 points to capture first place in the Northern Lakes League Championship at Napoleon High School on Feb. 21, while the girls wrestling team placed fourth overall.
The Genoa boys basketball team completed the third undefeated regular season in program history on Feb. 20 with a 71-33 win at home over Rossford.
In a battle of Press-area teams, the Woodmore girls basketball team used a big third quarter and a strong performance on the glass to help pull off a 50-42 road win over Gibsonburg in a Division VI sectional title game on Feb. 19.
