Area businesses, organizations and groups are invited to enter The Downtown Oak Harbor Scarecrow Contest, sponsored by the Oak Harbor Area Chamber of Commerce.
Scarecrows must be freestanding and cannot be attached to any village or private property. The chamber recommends using a weighted 5-gallon bucket, a wooden stand or some sort of homemade display. Scarecrows must be in good taste and appropriate for viewing by the public and families. (No adult, political, violent or gruesome themes will be accepted.)
The registration period runs through Sept. 29. All displays must be in place by Sept. 30. The public voting period runs Oct. 1-17. Winners will be announced Oct. 18. Prizes will be awarded to the top three scarecrows. All displays must be removed by Nov. 1.

Flag City Honor Flight to take off Sept. 9
Flag City Honor Flight (FCHF) is preparing for its 32nd mission on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
The flight will take 82 veterans, primarily from the Vietnam War era, to Washington, D.C., to visit memorials built in their honor.
Departing from Toledo Express Airport in the morning, veterans will embark on a one-day trip that will include visits to the Air Force Memorial, Navy Memorial, Iwo Jima Memorial, Korean Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, WWII Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery for the Changing of the Guard. At 9 p.m., they’ll arrive at Grand Aire Hangar for a Welcome Home celebration.
Veterans do not pay to fly. This flight is primarily sponsored by the families of Yoder Machinery and Yoder Brothers Machinery.
The organization relies on community donations and flight sponsorships to continue the mission. As a 100% volunteer-led organization, every donation goes directly toward honoring and thanking veterans for their service.
