In partnership with Highland Electric Fleets, Toledo Public Schools (TPS) is set to deploy 12 additional electric school buses ahead of the 2026-2027 school year.
While the district operates 118 buses daily, these additions mark a gradual shift toward propane and electric, with an anticipated annual fuel savings for the district of up to $1 million. The district said the investment is a commitment to both operational and fiscal responsibility along with improved student health and workforce development.
TPS has aligned its fleet transition with their current investments in career and technical education. Through workforce development programs, students are preparing for careers in advanced manufacturing, automotive technology, and vehicle electrification. By integrating these new buses into the curriculum, TPS turns its transportation infrastructure into a real-world classroom for high-demand automotive careers.
The project is supported by $4.7 million in funding from the EPA Clean School Bus Program funding, directly impacting the 21,000 students TPS serves throughout Northwest Ohio.
The district’s partner, Highland Electric Fleets, is North America's leading provider of "Electrification-as-a-Service,” helping school districts deploy electric fleets at scale and cost-effectively.
