To the editor: Who are we really voting for?

Posted

To the editor: There has been a lot of controversy in this year's mayoral race in the city of Oregon. It seems sometimes it is a "one man show'' and each one thinks he will definitively win.

But just think for a moment — who are these candidates?

On one hand, we have a mayor who has been in office several terms, and on the other hand, we have a candidate that - until the last election cycle - was totally unknown. Where do they stand on critical issues? Nobody knows.

Will heavy industry continue to grow, causing homeowners to be pushed out of properties they own? Has either candidate expressed a vision for the city other than the trite amount over the controversial "data center?" Will we gain thousands of residents or thousands of acres of industrial growth, while losing the small-town charm that Oregon once had? Will we make every street five lanes wide with a barrier in the middle? Will we add more security lighting so we cannot look out at night and view the stars? Will we be starved for electricity and water?

Both candidates seem to lean politically to one side, so what will really change?

We know so little about both candidates. Do we ever ask how does one survive on just a mayor's salary? Where did they come from, and what are their deep beliefs? Are we painting a rosy picture or just putting lipstick on a pig? Who are we really voting for?
