GPA: Registration under way Penta Adult Education Programs

Registration is open for Penta Career Center Adult Education short-term training programs.

Most classes begin in mid-August, with additional classes starting in September or October. Several new programs are being offered this fall, including Massage Therapy, Esthetician, Nail Technician, Emergency Dispatch and Firefighter Instructor 1 & 2. Classes are held at the Penta Career Center main campus located at 9301 Buck Road in Perrysburg Township.

Additional short-term programs offered by Penta Adult Education include Basic Auto Technology, Basic Industrial Electricity, Construction Technologies, Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2 Transition, Volunteer Firefighter, Welding and Intro to HVAC.

Penta also offers an Adult Workforce Diploma Program, which provides free job training classes for Ohioans age 18 and older who are withdrawn from school and wish to earn an industry-recognized credential aligned to one of Ohio’s in-demand jobs. Adults must pass a WorkKeys assessment to begin the program. Once students complete their training and pass all of the requirements, they will be awarded a state-issued high school diploma.

In addition, Penta Adult Education, in partnership with Ed2go, provides 300 affordable online courses in areas such as medical terminology, computers, arts & design, business, and health and fitness. Expert instructors teach the online courses.

Adults who want to improve their reading, writing, science, social studies, language and math skills or study for the GED (the high school equivalency test) can register for Penta’s free Aspire Career Pathways Readiness classes, offered at many locations in Lucas and Wood counties. Save the date for Eagle Fest

Clay High School alumni are invited to Eagle Fest on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 5-10 p.m. at Oak Shade Grove, 3624 Seaman Road, Oregon. The event will take place rain or shine.

Clay High School will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026.

Presented by the Clay Alumni Association, the all-class reunion is open to alumni and guests age 21 and older. Attendees can reconnect and reminisce while enjoying food trucks and an Eagle Spirit Wear Contest—wear green and gold. Outside food and drinks are not permitted.

Tickets are $20 per person and must be paid in cash.

Sales Tax Holiday 2026

In 2026, Ohio will host the standard back-to-school sales tax holiday of three days, starting 12 a.m. Friday, Aug. 7, until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 9.

There will be no expanded sales tax holiday on items $500 and under in 2026.

        Items that qualify

The back-to-school holiday applies to all items of clothing priced at $75 or less, school supplies priced at $20 or less, and school instructional materials priced at $20 or less.

Free audiobook walk

Stroll through Spiegel Grove’s peaceful arboretum, connect with fellow book lovers, sample audiobooks and learn where to find them during the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums’ audiobook walk on Wednesday, July 29.

The free event runs from 6-7 p.m. at Spiegel Grove, the Hayes Presidential Library & Museums grounds and an accredited arboretum with a mile of paved trails.

Hayes Presidential is partnering with Birchard Public Library in Fremont and Pan Yan Bookstore in Tiffin to give participants more information audiobooks through the event. The library and bookstore will be available on the grounds to discuss options, such as Libby, Hoopla and Libro.fm. Pan Yan Bookstore will also have a selection of books for sale.

Additionally, there will be audiobook samples from book clubs hosted by Hayes Presidential and some staff recommendations and picks around the grounds.

This event is a kick-off to a new romance book club that will be offered at Hayes Presidential. The club is inspired by Fanny Arabella Hayes Platt, sister of President Rutherford B. Hayes, and her love of reading. Information on the club is coming soon.

         

‘Coming Home to Nest’

An Eastwood HS All-Class Reunion will be held Saturday, Sept. 19, from 5-9 p.m. in the gym at Eastwood High School, 4900 Sugar Ridge Road, Pemberville.

The welcome and program will begin at 6 p.m. The celebration will include grazing stations, photos, contests (who traveled the farthest, most family members in attendance and graduating class with most in attendance).

School tours will also be offered from 4-5:30 p.m. the day before, Sept. 18, before the home football team.
