Oak Harbor High School's Science Olympiad team shines at state competition

Oak Harbor High School’s Science Olympiad team had an exciting and historic day on Saturday, competing for the third year in a row at the Ohio Science Olympiad State Tournament on the campus of The Ohio State University.

Led by team advisor, Lauretta Swint, Oak Harbor finished 22nd overall, which was the best in school history.

Only 40 schools qualify for the state tournament from eight regions across Ohio. Other schools from Northwest Ohio competing were Northview, Southview, Springfield and St. Francis.

Derek Lochotzki (co-captain) and Kale John, medaled in two events: Tower (fourth place) and Air Trajectory (sixth place).

Other top 12 finishers included: Libby Snodgrass and Lily Wilson, who were seventh in Write-it-Do-it; Kalyssa Dehring and Austin Cherry, who were 10th in Material Science; Adan Greer and Emma Bradbury, who were 11th in Robot Tour; Derek Lochotzki and Kale John, who were 12th in Helicopter.

The team also had five additional top 20 finishes: Derek Lochotzki and Austin Cherry, who were 13th in Electric Vehicle;  Kale John and Derek Lochotzki, who were 14th in Wind Power; Hannah Hartigan (co-captain) and Gray Warren, who were 16th in Forensics; Madison Torres and Kalyssa Dehring, who were 17th in Chemistry Lab; and Madison Torres and Hannah Hartigan, who were 20th in Disease Detectives.
