Health briefs: NMGL to host ‘Wellness by the Boat'

The National Museum of the Great Lakes is partnering with UToledo Health/Trauma Services to present Wellness by the Boat, a free outdoor Tai Chi class on Saturday, Aug. 9, at 9 a.m. The museum is located at 1701 Front St., Toledo. The event is free and open to the public.

Held in the museum’s Cliffs Great Lakes Maritime Park along the Maumee River, the class will offer participants an opportunity to stretch, strengthen and center themselves beside the historic Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship.

Certified instructor Corey Anderson, RN, BSN, Trauma Injury Prevention and Education Coordinator for the UToledo Trauma Program, will lead the program.

“We’re excited to bring the community together for a morning of movement by the water," said Ashley Streichert Lovejoy, NMGL marketing and communications manager. “This event reflects our ongoing commitment to wellness, accessibility and creating inviting spaces that connect people to the Great Lakes.”

Mobile health unit visit

The UT Health Mobile Unit will visit NMGL on Fridays, Aug. 15 and Sept. 12, from 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

The 37-foot Mobile Health Unit will offer free blood-pressure, glucose, A1C, and cholesterol screenings, along with health education, social service referrals, and more. No insurance or appointment is required. All services are provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

Adapted Chair Yoga

In observance of Disability Pride Month, the Toledo Lucas County Public Library will offer an Adapted Chair Yoga program featuring Integration Yoga with Jenn on Wednesday, July 30, from 2-3 p.m. in the meeting room at the Oregon Branch Library, 3340 Dustin Rd.

Attendees can explore yoga through traditional poses redesigned for a sitting position. Based upon participants’ needs, extra poses may be added suited for standing while using the chair for stability and support.

Life Line Screenings

Oak Harbor-area residents can learn about their risk for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and other chronic, serious conditions at Life Line Screenings being offered Thursday, July 31, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 122 W. Ottawa St. Free parking is available.

Screenings can check for:

  • Plaque buildup levels in arteries, related to risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke and overall vascular health.
  • HDL and LDL cholesterol levels
  • Diabetes risk
  • Kidney and thyroid function, and more

Blood drives set

The American Red Cross is calling blood donors – especially those with type O blood –to give blood now.

Ask the Expert

Mercy Health’s Ask the Expert series continues Thursday, July 17, when Dakota Stone, program coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Association, Northwest Ohio Chapter, will speak about the impact of the disease, the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia, disease stages and risk factors and current treatment and resources.

The one-hour program is presented the third Thursday of every month from 12:30-1:30 p.m. via Zoom. To join, participants can call 646-931-3860 and use Zoom meeting ID: 975 5220 8436. There is no need to pre-register.
