To the editor: The Lake Township trustees have place on the November 4th ballot for your consideration a two-mill, three-year-and-done road levy. Everyone depends on well-maintained township roads for travel, delivering services, and (providing) emergency safety services. Well maintained roads are a vital resource for our township.
Unfortunately, township road paving has fallen woefully behind. Twenty-five years ago, the township asphalt paved three miles a year. Now due to rising costs, there is barely enough funds to asphalt-pave one mile. This two-mill, three-year levy is designed to play catch-up and preserve our roads from further decomposing.
A newly asphalt-paved road is good for 15 to 20 years of usage. This three-year levy will put the township back in line with safe and properly maintained roads. Township roads are ultimately the taxpayer’s responsibility. The days of state and federal grants and funding are sadly gone. It’s now up to all of us to properly maintain township roads. Please consider a yes vote for the two-mill, three-year levy on November 4th. Thank you for your consideration.
