The Greater Toledo Chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America proudly awarded three separate $1,000 scholarships to deserving high school graduates on June 8.
Dick Nolte, a former captain in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War who served as the scholarship committee chairman, awarded Genoa’s Kaylyn Stahl, Clay’s Landon Eversman and Maumee’s Brynn Maier as the three recipients.
“All of the finalists were of high-caliber academic success and involved in service to their communities,” Nolte said.
All three were linked to a current or former member of the U.S. Armed Forces. Area high school seniors applied for consideration in the spring and were judged on such criteria as grade point average, character, school and civic involvement, and community service.
Stahl plans on attending Bowling Green State University, where she will study to become an athletic trainer or physical therapist. During her time with the Comets, she was a member of the National Honor Society, FFA, varsity volleyball and track, and she participated with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Eversman, meanwhile, will attend Owens Community College in the fall, where he will play baseball after leading the Eagles to the regional final this spring. During his time at Clay, he was named the NLL Cardinal Division Co-Player of the Year and landed a spot on the All-Ohio team. He was among the top 10 students academically, participated in a student leadership group, read to elementary students, and served as a co-captain in football - where he excelled as a running back.
Eversman has also assisted with Memorial Day ceremonies at Clay High School for several years, and plans on attending law school after earning a finance degree.
Maier will attend The Ohio State University with a plan to earn a bachelor’s degree in the field of chemical engineering before entering the military. She has been involved in student government, was a captain for Maumee’s varsity softball team and became a member of the National Honor Society.
The Vietnam Veterans local chapter, which serves Lucas, Wood and Ottawa Counties, has been awarding graduating high school seniors college scholarships since 2020.
