On June 10, The Ottawa County Task Force on Aging held events at the Magruder Hospital Conference Center in conjunction with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The observance included a proclamations by the Ottawa County Commissioners.
The task force is aiming to spread information about financial exploitation scams, which are now the number-one adult protective services issue in the state of Ohio. Among the initiatives is the distribution of bags with resources related to abuse, neglect and exploitation to the senior centers, to home delivered meal clients, to agencies and businesses that interact with seniors, and at Senior Day at the Ottawa County Fair on Wednesday, July 16.
A number of resources are available to help with prevention and mitigation of financial exploitation, including online at proseniors.org and ohioattorneygeneral.gov.
Anyone who suspects a senior may be the victim of abuse, neglect or exploitation, should call Adult Protective Services in Ottawa County at 419-707-8639 (after hours 419-734-4404); the statewide Adult Protective Services Referral line at 855-644-6277 or 911 for those in immediate danger.
