Two local students submitted winning designs in the OSS Solid Waste District’s Billboard Contest and earned the honor of having their artwork displayed for all to see in their communities.

The annual contest encourages fifth graders to create a design with a recycling or litter prevention theme. Winners’ billboards are being posted throughout April in celebration of Earth Day.

District staff voted for nine winning designs (three each from Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca counties) from among 891 entries.

Locally, winning designs were created by Genoa Elementary School student Emma Bryan and Oak Harbor Intermediate School student Mia Siegler.

Bryan’s billboard design was installed on SR 51 west of Main Street in  Genoa. Siegler’s design was installed on SR 163 west of Benton Street in Oak Harbor.

The winners, along with their respective schools, received replica mini billboards featuring their artwork as a tangible reminder of their achievement and the impact they've made.

Additionally, the winners received “no waste” lunch supplies to emphasize the importance of sustainable practices in their daily lives.

The District commended all the students and schools that participated in the contest. “Together, they've demonstrated the power of creativity, education, and collective action in shaping a greener, more sustainable future for our communities,” said Tim Hassinger, district communications and outreach specialist. “With each billboard that goes up, their messages will continue to inspire and remind us all of the importance of caring for our planet.”
