The Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce started off the village’s homecoming weekend on May 28 with its annual Cruise-In Car Show, an opportunity for people to show off their detailed vehicles, win cash prizes and enter into raffles.
While there will be amusement rides and food vendors for attendees to enjoy throughout the weekend, the car show drew much attraction downtown. Like many of the participants, John Nichols said he only pulls out his 1983 Detroit Lions-themed vehicle for car shows.
“I got it out of hibernation a couple years ago,” Nichols said. “I had the engine redone, new tires, and I put a paint job on it.”
The event was the first of four car shows the village of Genoa will hold this summer. The others will take place June 30, July 28 and Aug. 25.
The festival continued to host a variety of events over the weekend, including the annual grand parade, which typically attracts a big crowd. Some of the other events include live music at both the entertainment tent and shelter house, a 3-point basketball contest, a euchre tournament, and a Kiwanis bike giveaway.
Genoa’s homecoming festivities concluded May 30 with the village’s largest firework show they have ever put on, which chairman of the Genoa Homecoming Committee Leann Dufendock gave thanks to the festival’s various donors for.
