Golden: Breaking free

Posted

Are there goals you have never attempted to achieve? Perhaps there are circumstances you would like to change. Life is fluid. What was important to you in the past may be of no interest today. Conversely, the things you find appealing today might never have meant much to you before.

Life can be like a tree, the more time you spend in the same situation, the deeper the roots grow. Although roots provide stability, they come with a tradeoff. Roots make it nearly impossible to change direction. If you are exactly where you want to be, roots are great. But in order to effectuate change, you must first break free from them.

Roots grow so slowly that you are not fully aware of their presence. Yet, the effect is the same regardless of whether or not you recognize their existence. However, frustrations usually become exacerbated when you sense something's holding you back but can not identify what it is.

You have the ability to break free. Doing so takes time, effort, and patience. Roots that have formed over many years are not typically broken overnight. Breaking free is a progression of several steps. The prospect of breaking free can be simultaneously exciting and intimidating. It may even seem overwhelming.

It doesn't matter what kind of roots have formed or why. Roots provide a sense of comfort in that they are known and familiar. Breaking free from your roots entails going into an unknown area which is often nerve-wracking. It's not unusual for a person to prefer staying with the known even when doing so means remaining miserable.

Here are the steps which will enable you to break free of whatever is holding you back. Before you go any further, take some time to identify exactly what it is that is holding you back. You can not take the next step forward until you understand why you are where you are now.

Next, decide if you really want to break free. If you don't have a burning desire to do so, you won't. A casual feeling of "that would be nice" is not enough to provide the motivation required to succeed.

If you are not sure what you want to do, enumerate all the reasons to break free and compare them to the reasons not to. Additionally, you can list all of the benefits of breaking free compared to all of the advantages to remaining where you are now.

Once you have affirmed your determination to break free, you can put together a plan to get it done. This will be comprised of the individual steps that will take you to your desired goal. Then divide each step into a number of smaller steps that are easily manageable. If your steps are too big, they will seem overwhelming, and you will be hesitant to tackle them.

After your plan is in place, you must take action. If you do nothing, nothing will happen. You must begin with the first step listed in your plan and then continue with the second and each succeeding step until your goal is achieved.

At times, you may experience one or more setbacks. Don't worry about it. Get back on track and keep going. It doesn't matter if you stumble and fall. What's important is that you get back up.

Regardless of whatever is holding you back, you can break free. The more you work on it, the better you will get. There are untold opportunities awaiting you as you move forward in your life.
