9/11 first responder to speak at Oregon Branch Library

Posted

The Oregon Branch Library will host a special book signing and purchase event featuring author, former Marine, firefighter and Vietnam veteran Clarence Singleton on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 1-3 p.m.

The event, “Remembering 9/11 | Clarence Singleton: The Heart of a Hero,” will give community members an opportunity to meet Singleton, hear about his extraordinary experiences and purchase a signed copy of his book, The Heart of a Hero.

Singleton brings a remarkable perspective to the story of Sept. 11, 2001. A decorated former New York City firefighter, Singleton responded to the first attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, where he was credited with saving numerous lives. After retiring from the FDNY in 2000, he volunteered to respond to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, where he was seriously injured.

Attendees are invited to participate in a meet-and-greet line with Singleton and purchase a copy of his book. For more information about the event, please contact the Knights of Columbus at 419-866-6181.

The Heart of a Hero takes readers on Singleton’s deeply personal journey from tragedy and trauma toward hope, faith and renewal.

Beginning with his hard-scrabble childhood and continuing through his service in the jungles of Vietnam, where he was awarded the Purple Heart, Singleton recounts the experiences that shaped his life and his determination to never give up. His story carries readers from the devastation of ground zero to the challenges of rebuilding a life after unimaginable loss.

Singleton also shares his experience living with post-traumatic stress disorder and the lasting effects of his service and experiences as a first responder. Through deep faith, a strong sense of duty and perseverance, he demonstrates what it means to continue moving forward — even when hope and a miracle seem nowhere in sight.

Singleton’s story was featured in One Nation: America Remembers Sept. 11, 2001 by the authors of Life magazine.

Singleton has delivered inspirational speeches throughout the Mid-Atlantic region and has been featured in regional publications, on the Montel Williams Show and on several radio stations. He has also served as keynote speaker for Chester County’s Honor and Remembrance Ceremony commemorating Sept. 11.
