Waste district plans special collection events
The Ottawa Sandusky Seneca Solid Waste District annually holds special collection events for residents to dispose unwanted materials. The materials are grouped into four categories: electronics, tires, appliances, and household hazardous waste.
The collections are for all residents of Ottawa, Sandusky and Seneca counties - including all residents of Bellevue and Fostoria. Businesses and institutions are not accepted at these collections.
To be prepared with needed supplies and workers for each collection, the district will continue to require residents to pre-register for each collection.
Registration can be done online at RecycleOSS.org, or by calling 419-334-7222 ext. 0 and following the prompt.
There will be locations in all three counties for residents to participate in the collections. Information specific to all of the special collections, including dates, times and locations can be found while registering.
Registration for the appliance and household waste collections will start Sept. 1. The two collections will be on the same date, time, and location. Registration for the two collections will close Oct. 11.
Items primarily made out of steel, including air conditioners, dehumidifiers, lawn mowers, and items containing Freon will be taken at no charge at the appliance collection. Items made primarily out of plastic will not be accepted, including plastic fans and vacuum cleaners.
Items that will no longer be accepted at the HHW collection include: motor oil, lead acid batteries, gas cylinders, and non-regulated putties and adhesives.
Rechargeable batteries can be taken to Lowes Department stores for recycling. Alkaline batteries are non-hazardous and once dead can be disposed of properly in a trash bag.
Gas canisters and cylinders, including propane (accepted at the district’s appliance collections), helium, Freon, isocyanates CO2, O, MAPP gas, acetylene, and argon are not going to be accepted at the hazardous household waste collection anymore.
Unlike other years, there will only be one collection date for each of the special collections offered by the district.
