Treu House of Munch, Inc. celebrates 150 years

 
Treu House of Munch, Inc., located at 8000 Arbor Dr., Northwood, is celebrating a significant milestone—150 years in business.
   
Founded in 1875 as J. Munch & Sons Co., the company has transformed from a small family-run department store, cigar shop and restaurant into a leading regional distributor of top beverage brands. From transporting goods by horse-drawn wagons to becoming a trusted industry leader, Treu House of Munch has stood the test of time.
   
In 1909, the company became the first wholesale distributor for the Stroh Brewery and later expanded to include Budweiser.
   
The Prohibition era presented significant challenges, prompting a pivot to non-beverage items. However, the company ownership’s determination, coupled with a key partnership between the Munch family and Max Rudolph Heinrich Treu, led to its resurgence as Treu House of Munch in 1938.
 
Family ownership has remained central to the company’s success. In the early 1940s, vice president and sales manager, Richard (Dick) A. Esser received a single share of stock in recognition of his dedication. Over time, he acquired full ownership, securing the company’s future under the Esser family. Leadership transitioned to Richard (Rich) Esser in the mid-1970s and, in 2012, to his son, Todd Esser, who continues to drive the company’s growth and success.              
   
Today, Treu House of Munch distributes Anheuser-Busch, Constellation, and D.G. Yuengling as well as various local and regional craft breweries, serving Lucas, Wood, Ottawa, Fulton, Sandusky, Huron, and Erie counties. With a team of 85 employees, the company serves 1,200 retail customers.
