Senior Day set for July 30 at Wood County Fair

        The Wood County Fair will celebrate Senior Day Tuesday, July 30, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the “Free Tent” at the fairgrounds, located at 13800 W. Poe Rd., Bowling Green. Seniors 65+ will be admitted free with proper ID. This year’s fair runs July 28-Aug. 4.
        Coffee and donuts, sponsored by Brookdale of Bowling Green, will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. The James Adkins Trio will perform from 9-9:50 a.m. A welcome and opening address, along with The National Anthem will take place at 9:50 a.m.
        Other Senior Day highlights include:
        • 10-11 a.m.: Night Session Big Band, comprised of 18 musicians from the Toledo area, offering an upbeat repertoire spanning generations from yesterday to today.
        • 11 a.m.: Door prize drawing.
        • 11:10 a.m.: Bliss, a quintet of women who have “stepped outside the box” in the Northwest Ohio music scene with a blend of striking harmonies and self-accompaniment of violin, flute, acoustic guitars, keyboard, bass and light percussion instruments.
        • 12:10 p.m.: Lunch and presentation by Denise Niese, Wood County Committee on Aging executive director, and Wood County dignitaries.
        • 12:45-1:45 p.m.: Performer Jymi Dill.
        • 1:45-2:45 p.m.: East of Cheyenne, a three piece band performing classic country and classic rock.
        • 2:45 p.m.: Door prize drawing.
        Enter through Gate B or C off Poe Road. A free shuttle will be provided from the parking lot on Poe Road to the fairgrounds via golf carts from the Wood County Sheriff’s Office. When in the parking lot, call 419-352-8257.
 
Lecture to address healthcare needs of the elderly
        Registration is open for the third event of the 2024 Dr. Sharon Erel Lecture Series, which will feature Ammar Kayyali, MD, specialist in geriatric medicine and associate professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Toledo Medical Center.
        The lecture will be held Thursday, Aug. 8, from 8-9:30 a.m. at the McMaster Center, Toledo Lucas County Library - Main Library, 325 Michigan St., Toledo. Check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m.
        The program is being offered at no charge and includes continuing education credits for nurses and social workers/counselors. Community members and those who are not seeking continuing education are also encouraged to attend the insightful and informative talk.
        About the program
        Dr. Kayyali will provide an overview of the unique healthcare needs of the elderly. He will review ways to advocate for older individuals as well as tips to prevent illnesses and injuries related to the process of aging. He will also provide insight on treatments, along with local and national resources to help ensure this population receives the most comprehensive care.
        There will be a discussion related to the barriers to care that many individuals may have to navigate. Participants will learn ways to cope with, care for and plan for an individual with cognitive impairment.

Rummage & bake sale
        Oregon Senior Center’s annual Rummage & Bake Sale will be held Friday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m.-noon. All sellers will be set up outside of the center, located at 4350 Navarre Ave., Oregon.
        Crafter, vendors and sellers are invited to reserve space at $25 per selling area (two parking spaces – one for a vehicle and one to set up and sell items). The sale is open to everyone; participants keep their profits.

Life Line Screenings
        Residents living in and around the Genoa area can learn about their risk for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and other chronic, serious conditions with Life Line Screenings set for Saturday, Aug. 24  at Genoa American Legion Post 324, 302 West St. Free parking will be available.
        Screenings can check for:
        • The level of plaque buildup in arteries, related to risk for cardiovascular disease, stroke and overall vascular health.
        • HDL and LDL cholesterol levels.
        • Diabetes risk.
        • Kidney and thyroid function, and more.

Parkinson’s exercise group
        A Parkinson's Exercise Group meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 12-1 p.m. in Studio C at the Eastern Community YMCA, 2960 Pickle Rd., Oregon. This 60-minute class is for those with Parkinson’s who do not use a cane or walker.
        The class aims to improve motor skills with gait, strength and dexterity exercises. There is a $25 fee for each three-month session. The fall session will run in September- November. The winter session is set for December-February. Spring session will be March-May. Participants can join mid-session.

Magruder VIP group planning excursions
        Magruder VIP – a free group for those age 60 and older – is planning a series of trips, which are open to VIP members and guests, as well as to the community.
        Scheduled trips include:
        • Sept. 16-20: Niagara Falls and Toronto via Diamond Bus Tours – $800 per person, based on double occupancy (passport required).
        • Nov. 8: One-day bus trip to Frankenmuth – $89 per person.
