Former Eastwood quarterback Lake Boos and Cardinal Stritch quarterback Thomas Foust led the Gold to a 30-7 win over Black at Perrysburg’s 31st Annual Northwest Ohio Regional All-Star Football Game at Steinecker Stadium’s Widdell Field.

For the duo, it was their last hurrah before they rush off the play college football.

“It was fun playing with the guys,” Foust said. “Put on the shoes and go for one last ride and have fun, and get ready for college and the next level.”

Over 100 graduated seniors took to the field, but only after a week of practice in 90 degree-plus temperatures. At least one day of practice was moved indoors.

“It was super hot but they kept us refreshed, water and stuff, so it was good,” Foust said, adding that he was looking forward to wearing pads and hitting again, but forgot how physical that can get.

“It feels good. I’ve been working out again,” Foust said. “I wasn’t used to it — I’ve got to get used to it again.”

Foust better get used to it because he will be playing for Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan and Boos will be playing for Northwood University in Midland, Michigan, and summer camp is just weeks away.

The 6-foot-1, 182-pound Boos was named team MVP after completing 5-of-10 passes for 64 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

On the game’s opening possession, Boos threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver T.J. Davidson (Start) after leading the Gold on a six-play, 53-yard drive.  On Boos’ next series, he threw a 17-yard TD pass to wide receiver Cole Commisso (Tinora).

Boos also threw a long lateral to Otsego tight end Chase Helberg, who threw a 39-yard strike to Davidson. Davidson was tackled at the Black one-yard line, but that set up a touchdown run on a pitch from Boos to running back Steven McCoy (Whitmer), who found the end zone running off tackle.

Boos is the only Ohioan among 22 new recruits to join the Northwood squad this fall and one of three quarterbacks. There are only three other Ohioans already playing for the Timberwolves, including redshirt freshman kicker/punter Matt Paull (Anthony Wayne).

“Our top goal with this class was to get better up front,” said Northwood coach Leonard Haynes. “We still have some work to do on that front, but I’m very happy where we are now.”

Boos, a Division V second team All-Ohio selection his senior year, was the Alan Miller Jewelers All-Press Offensive Player of the Year.

Boos led the Eagles to an 8-3 season, including a 42-19 regular season win over D-V state semifinalist Ottawa-Glandorf and a 49-21 playoff win against Lakota.

Boos completed 72 percent of his passes (110 for 152) for 1,949 yards, threw 26 touchdown passes and had just three interceptions. His uncanny accuracy was due to his athleticism, his ability to throw on the run, and a talented recruiting corps. He always knew how to find his receivers, and they knew how to get open.

Boos was responsible for 2,220 total yards, averaging 201.8 per game, including carrying the ball 59 times for 271 yards and four TDs.

At the regional all-star game, Boos traded offensive possessions with Foust, who completed 6-of-12 passes for 29 yards and ran for 52 yards on eight carries.

Foust’s senior year at Stritch he completed 79-of-134 passes (59%) for 1,255 yards and 15 TDs, plus he ran for 1,030 yards on 102 carries (10.1 yards per carry) and 18 TDs. He led Stritch to a 5-4 season, including 2-2 in the TAAC, which was the school’s first winning football season in 15 years. His second best receiver, Clarence Brown, who caught 32 passes for 472 yards and six touchdowns, said the 6-foot-3, 185-pound Foust was the reason for the team’s success.

“Thomas Foust — he has his eyes on the field and he is always a great leader,” Brown told The Press.

More all-stars

Although Foust and Boos were among the top billing by game’s end, they were just a sampling of local talent playing in the regional all-star game. Brown played defensive back for the Gold and Foust’s top receiver at Stritch, Jaden Moss, played wide receiver. They were joined by Stritch linebacker Gage Power.

Clay running back Jordan Pettaway ran for 12 yards on his first carry and had three carries for 10 yards. He was joined on the Gold by Clay linebacker Owen Gibbs, defensive lineman Phil Baum and punter/kicker Aiden Dickens, who performed all the Gold team’s kickoff duties.

Representing Genoa on the Gold team was defensive back Merced Diaz. Diaz, Brown, Gibbs, and Baum helped lead a Gold defense that forced five turnovers and held the Black team to a total of minus three yards rushing. That included minus-15 yards rushing in the second half, thanks in part to two sacks by Wagner.

Black team quarterback Sam Scifers (Lake) completed 3-of-10 passes for 50 yards, including a 15-yard TD strike to Elias Triplett (Bowsher). Also representing Lake on the Black team was wide receiver Keagon Henry.

Oak Harbor was represented on the Black team by defensive linemen Ryan Snow and Dustin Schiets, Gibsonburg by defensive back Dustin Derr and linebacker Dominick Whetsel and Woodmore by offensive lineman Andrew St. John.
