FREMONT- Despite threatening skies and an ominous forecast, Fremont Speedway officials bravely forged ahead with the Aug. 13 event. Featuring the Ti22 Performance FAST 410 sprints, the MPD Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series non-wing sprints and the dirt trucks on Plaza Lanes/Cameo Pizza Night. Bowling Green, Ohio’s Travis Philo, who has been on a great streak lately, led the non-stop 30-lap FAST feature from start to finish to claim his first ever Fremont Speedway victory.
The NGK Spark Plugs redraw put Reed and Philo on the front row with Brubaker and Foos in row 2. The 30 lap feature roared to green with Philo grabbing the early lead and Reed in tow. The pair of black"five" cars would run 1-2 the entire distance, with Reed closing thgap a couple of times, but unable to do anything with Philo turning a nearly perfect 30 laps to claim the win. Despite the lack of position
changes in the top 2, the racing through the field was phenomenal with multiple cars flirting with disaster or sliding off the top of the race track. The show of the main event was the tremendous battle
within a battle as 1-2 in FAST points battled for the third spot through much of the race. In just 7 minutes and 23 seconds, Philo lapped up to 10th place in scoring the win. Byron Reed had his best ever FAST run, closing the gap to just .649 of a second at the finish. Lee Jacobs prevailed in the battle with Nate Dussel for the third spot with D.J. Foos rounding out the top 5. The balance of the top 10 included Craig Mintz, Stuart Brubaker, Kyle Capodice, Ricky Peterson and hard charger of the event, John Ivy.
Pleasant Hill, Ohio’s Matt Westfall, a former BOSS champion, earned his second career Fremont win in a rain-shortened 16 lap BOSS feature. The NGK Spark Plugs redraw for the BOSS 25 lap feature put Saban Bibent and Dallas Hewitt on the front row. Hewitt grabbed the quick early lead with Travis Hery in tow. Bibent quickly got around Hery, then Hewitt bicycled on the curb in turn one working lap 4, opening the door for Bibent to get to the lead. The first of four cautions flew for Steve Little who spun off turn 2 contacting the foam soft walls, but was able to continue. With Bibent still the leader, Hewitt and Matt Westfall engaged in a torrid battle for the runner-up spot until Travis Hery broke a front spindle, sending him into the foam wall blocks in turn 4. On the restart, Westfall and Hewitt began to pressure Bibent on the point. Westfall passed for the lead on lap 12, but a third caution flag for Ricky Lewis spinning, reverting to the last completed lap but Bibent was back on the point. On the restart, Westfall got inside Bibent for the lead off turn 2 to take the lead with Hewitt and Chapple following him. Over the next few laps, the race intensity began to rise as Isaac Chapple got to the runner-up spot, but a light rain also picked up intensity. Race officials were about to throw a caution for rain when Tayte Williamson spun off turn 2. With 16 laps completed, the race was declared official.
The Burmeister Trophy Dirt Trucks still have a B-main and A-main to run and track officials are looking into dates for those make-up races.
