Coroner hired in Ottawa County
The Ottawa County commissioners have approved the hiring of Dr. David Applegate to fill the upcoming term of county coroner.
Dr. Daniel Cardigan, who has been the county coroner since 2014, did not seek re-election. Consequently, the position has been vacant for the term starting Jan. 4, 2021.
Dr. Applegate is currently serving as coroner for Union County.
Under his contract with Ottawa County, he will be employed on a part-time basis and be paid $450 bi-weekly.

Interim director at Joyful Connections
Joyful Connections Boards of Directors announced the appointment of Tami Matthews as interim executive director, following the departure of Executive Director Shanna Strouse.
Serving Joyful Connections as Program Manager since December 2018, Matthews has varied experience working in nonprofits, including grant writing, special events, budget development, media and communications, and program development and implementation.
Before joining Joyful Connections as a visitation monitor in April 2018, she was a teacher at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor and St. Peter’s Lutheran in Church, Pawleys Island, South Carolina. She also served as the development director at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Columbus Branch and a development associate with Canine Companions for Independence.
Matthews holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Wittenberg University and a Master of Arts degree in Higher Education Student Affairs from Bowling Green State University. She has been active in the community including participating in Leadership Ottawa County, Class of 2020.
