Paul Kurt Smith

Paul Kurt Smith, “Kurt”, 77, of Martin, Ohio passed away peacefully at home with his wife by his side on Tuesday, August 1, 2023. He was born on October 31, 1945 in Toledo, Ohio, the son of the late Leon Paul & Eliza (Orebaugh) Smith. He married Joanne M. Lewandowski on December 30, 1995 and she survives.

Kurt was a 1963 graduate of Genoa High School. He was drafted into the United States Army and served from 1966-1969 assigned to the Neuropsychiatric Division, Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington DC. He attended the University of Maryland, graduating in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture and worked for the Maryland Dept. of Agriculture at the University of Maryland as a field agronomist until 1976. He then began work at the University of Toledo as Manager of Grounds and Fleet Services and Director of Facilities and Plant Operations until 1998. From there he served as president of H P Streicher, Inc., Toledo Ohio until 2008. He finished his career working for Shelly Materials, Inc., as a sales manager until his retirement in 2016.

Kurt served as an elected trustee of Allen Township, Ottawa County; was a member of the Allen Township Zoning Board of Appeals; served on the Ottawa Park Advisory Board, Toledo, Ohio; was a member of the Toledo Rotary Club and was also a member of the Lake Erie Antique Power Club.

Kurt lived on the family farm in Ottawa County most of his life. He enjoyed raising hogs, Percheron draft horses, restoring old tractors, cars and trucks in his farm shop. In addition to being an avid reader, Kurt enjoyed traveling, hiking, snowmobiling, bicycling, gardening and landscaping. The farm was the gathering place for family and friends over the years….dinners, holidays, parties, picnics, hay-rides and go-carts, with the evening typically ending around one of Kurt’s legendary and unsurpassable bonfires.

Kurt leaves behind his loving wife of 28 years, Joanne; daughters, Tiffiny (Kevin) Brown, Camp Lejeune, NC and Michelle (Rob) Gentry, Perrysburg, OH; stepsons, Richard (Marcy) O’Loughlin, Ottawa Hills, OH, Timothy (Holly) O’Loughlin, Greenville, SC and Mike (Shannon) O’Loughlin, Tipp City, OH; grandchildren, Madeline and Olivia Brown, Jack Gentry, Conor, Amanda, and Shane O’Loughlin, Tori O’Loughlin, Cooper and Elise O’Loughlin; sisters, Barbara (Jerry) Wells, Mason City, IA, Lois (Tom) MacPherson, Fort Mill, SC, Marylee (Louie) Ziebold, Chattanooga, TN and Carol (Michael) Fanning, Atlanta, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leon Paul (2019) and Eliza Smith (2009).
