The Oregon Fire and Rescue Department will host an open house Oct. 9 from 6-8 p.m. at fire station 41, 1040 S. Wynn Rd.
Assistant Chief Mark Mullins said the open house is part of the department’s observance of National Fire Prevention Week, with an emphasis on fire safety for children and families.
“Safety is the message. All the public education things we do in the schools, we want to make sure we relay that to not only the kids who have actually seen and done that but to the whole family,” Mullins said. “We only do K-4 in the schools. But this is something that stays with families for the rest of their lives. ‘Get out, stay out’, have a meeting place set, check your smoke alarms, have a plan in place. All those little things add up and can save your life.”
The open house will feature a bounce house simulator and a children’s fire house obstacle course. At the end of the obstacle course children can spray a fire hose at the simulator.
A fire engine from the 1940s will also be on display.
Mullins said smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and fire extinguishers will be given away while supplies last.
State Farm Insurance will have an informational booth and those attending the open house can register with the Red Cross for installation of free smoke alarms.
The station will be open to the public for viewing the department’s equipment and cider and doughnuts will be served.
Last year, about 350 people attended the open house, Mullins said, adding the Ohio Fire Marshal’s office and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources have been invited to participate this year.
The Oregon Fire and Rescue Department and the Jerusalem Township Fire and Rescue Department will also have equipment on display Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Baumann Auto Group dealership on Navarre Avenue.
Mullins said the Baumann event will be the department’s kick-off for Fire Prevention Week.
