Diabetes Get-Together
 
The next Magruder Diabetes Get-Together will be held Thursday, March 6, at 1 p.m. in the Magruder Conference Center, 615 Fulton St., Port Clinton.
 
These free get-togethers are for anyone dealing with diabetes or pre-diabetes, including family and friends. The topic for March will be “What is an A1C?” Certified diabetes care and education specialists will lead the discussion.

LCRT to meet
       
Lucas County Retired Teachers will hold a luncheon Thursday, March 20, from 12-2:30 p.m. at Toledo Country Club, 3949 River Rd., Toledo.
       
Speaker will be Robin Rayfield, ORTA executive director.

NHS Alumnus of  the Year Award
 
Northwood High School is seeking nominations for its Annual “Alumnus of the Year” award. Nominees must have graduated from Northwood High School in or before the spring of 2024.
 
The recipient will be recognized at the Academic Awards Banquet in May. Letters of nomination should include the nominee’s name, current address, year of graduation and a description of his/her accomplishments since graduation. These can include but are not limited to, post-high school education, honors or awards received, employment history, and any other relevant information to support the nomination.
       
The deadline for applications is Friday, March 14. Letters of nomination must include the name and address of the person making the nomination and should be sent to Tracey Petteys, Principal, Northwood High School, 600 Lemoyne Rd., Northwood, OH 43619 or TPetteys@northwoodschools.org.
 
 
Winter heating help
       
The Winter Crisis Program provides utility assistance for electric and heating bills for residents of Ottawa, Sandusky, Seneca, and Wood counties. Applications are being accepted through Monday, March 31.
 
The program can help residents avoid a utility shut-off, reconnect a utility or provide bulk fuel supplies such as propane, wood, and fuel oil for households with less than a 25% bulk fuel supply.
       
Eligible households must be at or below 175% federal poverty guidelines (e.g., $26,355 for a household of one, $54,600 for a household of four).
       
Applicants must provide a list of all household members, including Social Security numbers, birth dates, and proof of citizenship; proof of income for all household members for the previous 30 days or 12 months and copies of recent utility bills.

Park district launching new volunteer program
       
The Park District of Ottawa County will host a Volunteer Orientation to introduce its new volunteer program and the various opportunities available on Thursday, March 6, at 6 p.m. at Shores & Islands Ohio Welcome Center – West, at 770 S.E. Catawba Rd., Port Clinton.
       
The free, one-hour orientation will provide attendees with information about the Park District, its mission and goals and expectations for the Volunteer Program.
       
Light refreshments will be provided and no registration or commitment is required.
       
The Volunteer Program is open to ages 18 and older, and minors with signature of a parent/guardian.
       
Volunteer opportunities in events and programming, and park maintenance will be available and discussed. Park District employees Jannah Wilson, executive director; Sara Hill, administrative specialist, and Chuck Mattimoe, operations assistant, will oversee and manage the new program.
       
“Volunteers are the heart of our Park District as we work together to create meaningful outdoor experiences and access to nature,” Wilson said. “We look forward to building a strong coalition of volunteers in order to further our mission for the Park District.”

Quilt Guild to meet
       
The Maumee Bay Country Quilters’ Guild will meet on Tuesday, March 4, at 6:45 p.m. at the Northwood Church of God, 3375 Curtice Rd., Northwood.
       
Doors will open at 6 p.m. The program will be presented by Jean Overmeier and seven Black Swamp Quilters who will show and discuss their recent challenge, “Name That Tune.”  Visitors and new members are welcome. The visitors’ fee is $10 and yearly membership is $35.
 
Pucks and Paws
The Wood County Fraternal Order of Police hockey team, The Warthogs, is hosting a hockey game against their counterparts from the Detroit Police Hockey Club on Saturday, March 15 at Tam-O-Shanter in Sylvania at 7 p.m.
   
The blue-on-blue match is a fundraiser for Operation Saves, which is a pet shelter/rescue dedicated to being a sanctuary for adorable and adoptable pets, as well as those deemed unadoptable.
 
A meet and greet with available pets for adoption will be held at the contest, and 100 percent of the proceeds from the event will go to Operation Saves.
