Lourdes golf team led by former Eagle Jenne’ Venier

As Lourdes heads into the 2019-2020 golf season, experience abounds for head coach Gil Guerrero (Waite).
As Guerrero begins his sixth year at the helm of the Gray Wolves, he returns all nine players from last year’s squad, which finished sixth place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference jamborees one season ago and eighth at the WHAC Championships.
Guerrero has also brought in four talented freshmen who will look to break into the lineup early in the year, and strengthen the team’s position in the standings.
Seniors Jenne’ Venier (Eastwood) and Makenzie Fannin (Centerburg) led Lourdes in scoring average last year and both captured WHAC Golfer of the Week honors during their junior seasons.  Venier averaged 92.76 one season ago while Fannin posted a 93.13 scoring mark.  For their careers, the duo rank fifth and eighth respectively on the career scoring list for the Gray Wolves.
Delanie Notheis (Clay) will get her first taste of collegiate golf this season as well.
Lourdes began its season by tying for fifth place at the Trine Fall Kick-off Classic held at Zollner Golf Club in Angola, Ind.
The Gray Wolves fired a team total of 373, matching the score of Rio Grande.  Lourdes was just seven strokes behind fourth place Cleary.  Grace won the tournament after posting a score of 312, 13 shots ahead of runner-up Olivet.
Lourdes team score was 15 shots better than their total in the same event to open the 2018-2019 season.
“Overall it was a good team effort to start the season,” head coach Gil Guerrero said following the round.  “It gives us a good indication of the things that we need to work on in our quest to become even more competitive.”
Venier led the Gray Wolves with an 89 on the 5,963-yard, par-72 course.   Lourdes returned to the links next Saturday (Aug. 30), as the Gray Wolves traveled to Harrod, Ohio for the first day of the two-day Ohio Northern Fall Invitational at Colonial Golfers Club.
The Gray Wolves will host a pair of events this fall, with the Lourdes Invitational set for Sept. 4 at The Legacy Golf Club before closing out the first half of the season on Oct. 14 with the Gray Wolf Invitational at Sylvania Country Club.
Lourdes was selected to finish in seventh place in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference for the 2019-2020 season according to the preseason poll of the league’s head coaches.
Northwestern Ohio was picked win the league after winning last year’s WHAC Championships while Indiana Tech, last season’s regular season jamboree champion, was selected second.  Siena Heights was tabbed third followed by Aquinas and Lawrence Tech.  Madonna was chosen won position ahead of the Gray Wolves while Cleary finished eighth in the preseason balloting.  Cornerstone, Rochester (Mich.), Concordia (Mich.), and first-year program Michigan-Dearborn rounded out the poll.
Lourdes finished in sixth place during last fall’s series of jamborees before posting an eighth place finish at last season’s WHAC Championships held in April.
