Donations appreciated
To the editor: The Elmore Unit of The Salvation Army thanks the Elmore Kiwanis, Richard Harman, of Woodville, and all the other volunteers for standing by our kettles during the holidays.
A grand total of $3,170 was collected in the Elmore and Woodville communities.
The money collected in Elmore and Woodville was spent within our local communities.
Thanks to all who donated money and bought gifts from the Angel Trees in the libraries.
This year we served 17 families, including 43 children.

Gambling problems
To the editor: Ohio H.B. 29 has made sports gambling legal in Ohio and the industry operators are offering huge bonus incentives to play, like anglers tossing dough balls to carp. They are after the huge amount of what the industry calls, discretionary money, which they expect Ohioans to spend.
Unfortunately, the poor souls who are unable to stop at spending only “fun money” now have, at their fingertips, the choice to wager money intended for more important things like food, rent and their children.
The disease could harm entire families.
Our governor was instrumental in legalizing this, he even called it inevitable. And from what I’ve read, our state’s cut is so comparatively small, it’s actually laughable. The industry got a sweet deal.
This is the same governor who once sincerely scolded us daily for not following COVID 19 protocols, as it endangered the safety, health and well-being of our families, neighbors and barstool partners. This whole deal appears to run counter to that principle.
On Nov. 30, the governor announced that he would make expansion of the mental health care industry, which includes gambling addiction treatment, a priority in his next budget proposal. This would ultimately put it upon the taxpayers to pay for the damage, with little help from those raking in the money.
Once again Ohioans are left holding the bag. I already know the odds and I sure don’t snap at dough balls. Think about it before you bet yourself.
