With curb-side refuse collection and recycling service set to end on Jan. 31 in Lake Township, the township trustees have scheduled a meeting for Jan. 11 to give residents a chance to learn about other options.
The meeting will be held from 5-7 p.m. in the township administration building, 27975 Cummings Rd.
Representatives from area refuse collection companies have been invited to the meeting to distribute information about the services they offer and answer questions from residents.
The township’s current trash hauler, Republic Services, informed the township it would not renew its contract with the township after it expired Dec. 31, 2022. But the hauler will continue to pick up trash and recyclable materials until the end of January. Users will receive pro-rated bills.
The drop of service by Republic affects unincorporated areas of the township, not the villages of Walbridge and Millbury.
Mark Hummer, township administrator/police chief, said companies that have expressed interest in the past about providing collection service to the township have been invited to the meeting,
Richard Welling, a township trustee, said the township has also contacted the Wood County Solid Waste District to explore options for local recycling.
The trustees didn’t receive any bids in October when they advertised for service proposals. They received one proposal in November but it lacked several specifications in the current service agreement.

Code Red registration
Residents may also register at the meeting for Code Red, the system that provides information about weather alerts and Amber alerts, said Ron Craig, the township’s community policing officer.
The Crime Prevention and Community Policing Division of the Lake Township Police Department will also host a presentation at 7 p.m. by Brian Boos, Wood County assistant prosecutor, who will discuss the criminal justice system.
