On July 19, at Northwood’s Palooza in the Park, the Northwood Local School District made it official — the football stadium is now “Ken James Field” at Ranger Stadium.

James had no idea it was coming as organizers say they successfully kept it a secret until the festival.

“It was good,” James said. “The good thing was seeing some players I had not seen in a while — like guys who had played 20 years ago. One came up from North Carolina, and I talked to him which was cool, and I got to see some guys I hadn’t seen in a while and that was cool.”

James has been head football coach at Northwood 35 years and served 22 years as athletic director, where he has been instrumental in the design, funding, construction and development of Ranger Stadium. The board presented James with a resolution, signed by Superintendent Jason Kozina and Board President Amy Romstadt, at the festival and furthered the proclamation with another new addition to the stadium.

A committee will be formed to form a Ring of Honor that will recognize those persons who have been essential to the success of Northwood Schools through volunteer work. The resolution stated, “The board understands that recognizing Ken James’ success can only be a true success by recognizing others to come.”

Entering his 36th season in 2021, James has an accumulated record of 210-149. James, who also spent three years as an assistant coach at Lima Central Catholic before coming to Northwood over three decades ago, has led his team to 13 league titles, and 10 playoff appearances.
