Voters in the Gibsonburg Exempted Village School District are being asked to renew a 1 percent, 5-year income tax levy on the Nov. 8 ballot.
Superintendent Bob Falkenstein said the income tax generates approximately $1.24 million annually for the Sandusky County school system, representing about 10 percent of the district’s budget for operating expenses.
To help promote renewal of the tax, school officials have been stressing it is only a tax on earned income and not levied on Social Security benefits, pensions, property, and rental income.
Voters originally approved the tax as a 0.75 percent issue. It was renewed as a 1 percent tax in 2018 and will expire on Dec. 31, 2023.
If voters renew it, the tax will commence Jan. 1, 2024.
“We are always grateful for the continued support from the public” Falkenstein said. “We will continue to spend the money as wisely as we can to earn that continued support.”
