Heslet, Peacock earn City League top gridiron honors

Waite football swept the Toledo City League awards, with first-year coach Aaron Peacock getting Coach of the Year honors and 6-foot-2, 165-pound senior quarterback Nik Heslet earning Player of the Year honors.

The Indians finished the regular season 4-1 and were the No. 2 seed in the City League final four, taking on Woodward Thursday at Rogers. No. 1 seed Start took on No. 4 seed Rogers in the other semifinal. The winners will meet this Thursday, Nov. 12 at Bowsher, kickoff at 6 p.m.

Heslet, the TCL first team quarterback, has completed 41 of 73 of his passes (56.2 percent) for 556 yards and four touchdowns and he has run for 130 yards on 31 carries and two TDs. Heslet is also the City League’s first team place kicker and a second team defensive back with 11 tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble.

Also getting first team is 6-2, 160-pound senior receiver Adrien Brown, who has caught seven passes for 121 yards and three TDs. Morrell Jordan, a 6-0, 205-pound senior, is a first team tight end, 6-1, 285-pound senior Marketh Woodmore is a first team offensive lineman.

On defense, Jordan is a first team linebacker after getting 30 tackles, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, four sacks and scoring two defensive TDs. Jayven Boose, a 5-9, 155-pound junior, is a first team defensive back after getting 15 tackles and is also a first team return specialist. Brown is also a first team punter.

Waite 5-9, 160-pound senior Kristian Harris is a second team running back, running for 110 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown and catching three passes for 19 yards. 

Waite had two second team offensive linemen — 6-1, 265-pound junior Jaiden Cope and 6-0, 230-pound senior Matthew Lamonds.

On defense, 6-1, 285-pound lineman Terrance Holbert is second team with nine tackles, one forced fumble and two sacks.
