Greenhill, Leyerle qualify for state golf tournament

Three senior golfers, Woodmore’s Danny Greenhill, Genoa’s Tommy Giles and Gibsonburg’s Sydney Leyerle, were medalists at their respective sectional golf tournaments.

However, only Greenhill and Leyerle advanced from the district to the state tournament. Leyerle has advanced to state all four years of her high school career.

Greenhill was medalist in the Division III sectional golf tournament at Green Hills Golf Course, shooting 36-36—72.

At the district meet, Greenhill shot 39-37—76 to finish second at Bowling Green’s Stone Ridge Golf Course and advance to the state meet at North Star Golf Course Oct. 16-17. He finished one stroke behind Pettisville golfer Tommy McWatters (37-38—75) and tied with Pettisville’s Max Leppelmeier and Allan East’s Zach Miller.

At the sectional, the Wildcats finished first as a team, scoring 336 to defeat second place Ottawa Hills (342).  For the Wildcats, junior Aaron Miller shot 40-41—81, senior Ian Jacobson shot 44-42—86, junior Landon Emch shot 48-49—97 and junior Duane Perkins shot 54-45—99. The ’Cats shot 351 at the district meet to finish ninth and did not advance to state. The ‘Cats are coached by Rodger Jimison.

At Ironwood Golf Course, Leyerle was medalist, shooting 37-35—72 as the Golden Bears won a Division II sectional championship, shooting 370 to defeat second place Wauseon (371).

At Sycamore Springs Golf Course, Leyerle shot 36-41—77 at the district meet to advance to the state tournament at the Ohio State University Gray Course on Oct. 16-17. Leyerle tied for third with defending state champion and golf friend Kyleigh Dull (36-41—77), a Lakota senior. Lima Central Catholic senior Mary Kelly Mulcahy was medalist, shooting 37-36—73 and St. Henry senior Ellen Naumann was second, shooting 40-36—76. 

At the sectional meet for the Golden Bears, junior Taylor Sworden shot 51-46—97, sophomore Ellie Stout shot 50-50—100, junior Morgan Albanese shot 46-55—101 and senior Ashley Mendoza shot 55-56—111. At districts, Gibsonburg shot 393 to finish fifth, one spot out and eight strokes from advancing to state as a team (Wauseon 385). The Bears are coached by Brent Liskai.

At the D-II boys sectional tournament, Giles was medalist, shooting 35-38—73 at Heatherdowns Country Club in South Toledo to defeat two second place golfers from Wauseon (Dylan Grahn, Andy Scherer) by six strokes. Giles advanced as an individual to the district tournament, but the Genoa team did not advance after finishing in fifth place, shooting 363.

At Findlay Country Club’s district meet, Giles shot 46-39—85, good for an 11th place tie but Giles did not advance to state. He was three strokes short of the last individual qualifier, Scherer (43-39—82), who Giles had defeated at sectionals.
