Gibsonburg cagers champions
Under the direction of coach Michelle Gressman, the Gibsonburg 5th Grade Girls Basketball team won the Sandusky Bay Conference championship.
Gibsonburg opened the season at home against Willard, winning 23-20. Next, the team travelled to Huron and won, 28-9 and then won at home on December 15th against Port Clinton, 26-6.
From there on, the team played on the road for the rest of the season: winning them all over Old Fort, 30-16, Port Clinton, 26-13, Edison, 32-17, Huron, (Team 1) 20-13, Huron (Team 2), 26-6 and Clyde 27-24 in overtime. Gibsonburg finished the regular season 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the division.
On Sunday, February 2, Gibsonburg travelled to Vermillion High School for the Bay Division Tournament. The team had one teammate out with a fever, so they had seven players for the day.
Gibsonburg started the day at 11 a.m. against Port Clinton, winning, 30-14. Then we played what Gressman called “a tough Vermillion team.”
“We beat them in double overtime, scores were tied at 23 then tied at 27 then Gibsonburg’s Elly Evarts put us ahead by two and we won, 29-27. We went on to play against Oak Harbor in the championship game. We had a couple injuries during the game, but the girls pushed through and got the job done. We won 16-14,” Gressman said.
She said before the season began, the girls needed a few practices together before they got to know each other.
“Our season started on Saturday, November 2nd. We had practices two days a week and knew we’d be able to get nine practices in before the first game,” Gressman said.
