Eastwood golf — 11 lettermen — boys and girls combined

J. Patrick Eaken

Gardner’s 50th year at the helm looks promising for his team. Last year, the Eagles were 51-47 in tournaments and 5-2 in dual meets, finishing third in the Northern Buckeye Conference

The Eagles return six lettermen — seniors Zack Buehler (43.3 in league play last year) and Ethan Edelbrock and juniors Quinton Farmer, Lucas Gallaher, Trent Marten (46.9) and Tristan Schuerman (44.2).

Last year Buehler was first team All-NBC, Tristan Schuerman was second team and Marten honorable mention. Because of the return of his letter winners, Gardner believes his team will “hopefully finish in the upper division” of the league this year.

“The league could be very balanced this year. It depends mostly on who has worked hard this summer,” Gardner said. “We have a good knowledge of golf rules, etiquette and course management, but a lack of summer tournament experience.”

Last year, Eastwood won one NBC shootout at Stone Ridge Golf Course in Bowling Green, scoring a 176 to defeat Genoa (181) and Woodmore (185). For the Eagles, Buehler shot 43, Tristan Schuerman both shot 44, Marten shot 47 and Edelbrock shot 49.

However, Genoa and Woodmore finished as league co-champions. Genoa and Woodmore had a league score of 44 points each, followed by Eastwood (36), Lake (32), Otsego (23), Rossford (18) and Elmwood (13). The Comets managed to save the co-championship by winning the league’s 18-hole tournament after Woodmore won three of four of the nine-hole shootouts. It was Genoa’s fourth straight league championship and the first for Woodmore in seven years.

Coach John Cavendish has been the mainstay of Eastwood’s girls program, too, but not for 50 years. However, his 20 years at the helm is nothing to scoff at.

The Eastwood girls return five letter winners, including one second-year player, including senior Hannah Lang, juniors Mariah Hahn, Evie Hall, Mallory Kramer, Kailin Wargo and sophomore Ella Speck. Hahn was second team All-NBC and honorable mention all-district last year and Hall was HM all-district.

“I am really excited about this year’s team,” Cavendish said. “We have nearly everyone back for at least a second season, all veteran players. I have a great feeling about this team. Their personalities, while different, all blend well together on the course. They certainly have the potential to do some really good things this year.  I’m ready to get started, especially after last year.”
