Duquette-Schiets win league title

In Sandusky Bay Conference tennis, Oak Harbor was 11-9 overall and 6-7 in the league with one match remaining against Port Clinton last week. If PC won, they tied Willard for the SBC title.

At the league tournament, Oak Harbor’s second doubles team Hannah Duquette and Hailey Schiets were champs and first team All-SBC. Emma Zibbel and Ella Dedes finished third at first doubles to be second team All-SBC. Sectional were to begin last Thursday and first singles player Grace Johnson was the fourth seed.

All seven Oak Harbor players who participated in the league tournament are seniors. Duquette and Schiets opened the league tournament by defeating Huron juniors Lauren Walls and Alpana Kurtz, 6-2, 6-0. In the semifinals, the Rockets’ duo defeated PC junior Alyssa Mares and freshman Reagan Ruthsatz 6-2, 6-4, and in the final they defeated Edison seniors Lindsey Kowalski and Natalie Costello 6-1, 7-5.

All three Oak Harbor singles players placed fifth — Johnson in first singles, Jaylie Rollhieser in second singles and Carly Stevens in third singles.

Zibbel and Dedes won their first doubles match over Tiffin Calvert junior Hannah Welter and senior Emily Dell, 6-1, 6-1, and then lost to the eventual league champions, PC juniors Arielle Montowski and Paige Reinick, 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinals.
