Darrell W. Opfer
Darrell W. Opfer, 83 of Oak Harbor, Ohio, died Sept 20, 2024 at Magruder Hospital, Port Clinton, OH following an illness. He was born June 17, 1941 in Genoa, OH to the late Milton & Iva (Gleckler) Opfer. He was a 1959 graduate of Harris-Elmore High School and Bowling Green State University.
Following college, Darrell began his career in public service. He traveled to Kenya where he was a member of the United States Peace Corps. He taught all subjects offered to boys ages 14-20 for three years. When Darrell returned to the United States, he was hired to teach at Woodward High School in Toledo. After a year, he returned to Ottawa County where he spent the next 14 years at Genoa High School.
In 1984, Darrell was elected to serve as Ottawa County Com- missioner, serving for eight years. Darrell also served four terms as State Representative to the Ohio Legislature, representing Ottawa County and parts of Lucas and Erie Counties. It is because of this service that Flags be lowered to half-staff until his interment by order of the Ottawa County Commissioners. He also served on the Board of Directors for Ottawa County Improvement Corporation and Camp Sabroske. Darrell was a devout Democrat and a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Elliston.
Survivors include his sister Karen (Douglas) Lick; niece Kristen (Kevin) Haynes and their children Lindsay (Jonathan) Haynes-Alsip and Shelby Haynes; nephew Dr. David (Dr. Keisha) Lick and their children Kate and Grace Lick; and good friend Virginia Park.
Memorial Services will begin at 2pm on Sunday, October 6, 2024 at Trinity United Church of Christ, 17955 W. 3rd Street, Elliston, OH 43432 with the family to receive friends beginning at 1pm. Private burial will be held in Elliston Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Trinity United Church of Christ.
