Charles Thomas "Tom" Siglar

Charles Thomas “Tom” Siglar, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 20, 2022 at the Genoa Retirement Center. He was born on December 16, 1931 in Genoa, Ohio to the late Harold and June (Downing) Siglar. Tom married Alice Shessler Brown on September 14, 1974 in Davison, MI, and she survives.
Tom was a proud 1949 graduate of the former Clay-Genoa High School where he excelled academically, lettering in football and basketball. He was a member of the 1947 championship football team, Genoa’s first unbeaten and untied season ever. Tom, a 1954 graduate of the University of Toledo, was a lifelong Rocket fan and a season basketball ticket holder for many years. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve, honorably discharged after 7 years. He worked as a clerk-typist while stationed in Philadelphia and San Francisco. He missed out of officer’s training school due to being color blind.
Tom’s father began his own plumbing business in 1929, Siglar & Sieving, which is still in operation in Genoa. Tom remembers when he was 8 years old, he would carry tools for his dad at various job sites. In high school, he made the decision he would not be a P.K. (plumbers kid)! One of Tom’s many part-time jobs during his college years was showing weekly free movies with his friend, Reid Johnson. They covered all the area towns and were supported by advertisements from local businesses.
Tom was employed by Ohio Belting & Transmission Co., Toledo, for over twenty years, while owning and operating 49 apartments in East Toledo. The fruits of this sideline enabled him to take an early retirement in 1987. Tom and Alice traveled to U.S.A., including Alaska and Hawaii. The highlight of their travels was a wonderful European river cruise. All of these vacations are documents in numerous albums.
Their love of classic country music involved many different venues to see performances by George Jones, Merle Haggard, Ray Price, Johnny Cash and others as well as excursions to Renfro Valley, KY.
Tom is survived by his wife of 47 years, Alice; son, Thomas H. Siglar; stepsons, David (Susan Beshalske) Brown and Alan (Traci Schimming) Brown; granddaughter, Stacy; step-grandchildren, Andrew (Amanda Cedoz) Brown, Cory (Jaime Taylor) Brown, Christy (Brad) Beach, Rachel (Pat) Hyde and Erica Brown; great-grandsons, Brantley, Decker and Donny; and cousin, Don Siglar. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Steven; daughter, Tamara; granddaughter, Cassandra; and sister & brother-in-law, Janice and Judge Earl Barradaile.
Per Tom’s wishes, private graveside services will be held at Clay Township Cemetery.
