ALES for ALS fundraising event set for Aug. 24 in Toledo
A beer festival to benefit ALS will be held Thursday, Aug. 24 from 5-10 p.m. at Hensville Park, N. St Clair St, Toledo.
In partnership with Ales for ALS, the event will bring together brewers, beer enthusiasts, and the Toledo community to help end ALS by sampling local craft brews.
Attendees will have the chance to sample a variety of beers from more than 24 local brewers. In addition, Fleetwood Gold and the Skittle Bots will provide live music.
Festivalgoers can also enjoy food from Fleetwood’s Restaurant at Hensville and sample fare from a variety of additional food trucks.
All funds raised will benefit Ales for ALS, which supports ALS research at the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI).
Toledo Takes on ALS is the brainchild of John and Tracy Schinharl, both of whom grew up in Oregon. This event holds a deeply personal meaning for the Schinharl family, as John was diagnosed with ALS in late 2022. After visiting the lab at ALS TDI in Massachusetts, the Schinharls and their friends were inspired to take action and fundraise to help find a cure for the disease. Now, they are calling upon the community to join them in raising funds that will assist ALS TDI in finding effective treatments for ALS.
“Tracy and I recently attended the Cincinnati Red’s Lou Gehrig Day festivities and during the game, they were sharing educational topics about ALS. The one point that resonated with us is just how little progress has been made in the 80+ years since Mr. Gehrig died from ALS, in spite of the tireless effort by many in the medical community,” Schinharl said. “They say in the ALS Community that ALS is not incurable, just underfunded. We’re just offering our small contribution to help fix that.”
Tickets for Toledo Takes on ALS are available for $10 and include admission to the event, a souvenir cup and one beer ticket. Inside the venue, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase additional beer tickets.
The Toledo Takes on ALS festival is possible thanks to the support of title sponsors Super Fitness and Surface Combustion, along with a number of other sponsors and participating breweries.

About Ales for ALS:
Ales for ALS is a national program that raises money for vital ALS research at the ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI). Each year, Ales for ALS breweries receive a free blend of experimental hops, which are donated by B.T. Loftus Ranches and YCH Hops. Breweries then raise money for ALS TDI through sales of their limited-edition Ales for ALS beers, which are made from the donated hops, and through proceeds generated from their events and festivals.
Since 2013, breweries participating in Ales for ALS have raised more than $4,000,000 for ALS research at ALS TDI.
