9th Annual Eastwood Jazz Festival set for May 7

        The 9th Annual Eastwood Jazz Festival will be held Saturday, May 7 at Eastwood High School, 4900 Sugar Ridge Rd., Pemberville.
        The festival will include dinner and entertainment provided by the Toledo Jazz Orchestra Combo and the Eastwood, Bowling Green, North Baltimore, Otsego and South Central high school jazz bands.
        Doors open at 5 p.m. Performances start at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The four-course meal will feature smoked beef brisket and grilled seasoned pork loin. A vegetarian option is available.
        Tickets are $30 for dinner and entertainment and $15 for entertainment only. Tables for eight with preferred seating are $210.

“Kiss Me, Kate”
        The Central Catholic High School music department will present its 93rd spring musical production, “Kiss Me, Kate” May 6-8 at the Valentine Theatre in downtown Toledo.
        Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.

        Tickets are $15 for the first and second floor, and $12 for balcony seats. Student tickets with I.D. are $10. Please note, there is a $2 handling fee per ticket added on by the Valentine Theatre, and internet convenience fees if ordering online.
 
Senior Luncheon planned
        Northwood Local Schools will present a Senior Citizens Luncheon, Friday, June 3 at 11 a.m. in the cafeteria at the K-12 school building, 700 Lemoyne Rd.
        All senior citizens residing in the Northwood Schools district are invited.

Northwood to sponsor
Summer Feeding Program

        Northwood Local Schools will sponsor the Summer Feeding Program (SFSP) for Northwood children June 6 through July 29.
        The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and is administered in Ohio by the Ohio Department of Education, Food and Nutrition Service.
        Meals will be prepared by Northwood Food Service Department and will be served from 11-11:45 a.m. at Northwood Local, 600 Lemoyne Rd. and from 11-11:30 a.m. at a satellite location at Brentwood Park, 6000 Wales Rd.
 
Stone Lab accepting
summer applications

        Stone Lab, The Ohio State University’s island campus on Lake Erie, is now accepting applications from Ohio State students for 2022 summer classes. Located on Gibraltar Island near Put-in-Bay, the lab offers introductory and upper-level college classes on topics ranging from algae identification to zoology.
        Classes are hands-on, with daily field trips and laboratory sessions that make Lake Erie science directly accessible to students. Classes start as early as May 17 and run into the fall. A full list of courses and professional development workshops, which range from one day to six weeks in length, is available online at go.osu.edu/SLcourses.
        Applications are now open at go.osu.edu/sciencerequires. Applications will be accepted until May 20.
 
Memorial Day program
        The student body and staff of Morrison R. Waite High School will present its 107th Annual Memorial Day Program, “Remembering the Sacrifice; Honoring the Mission,” Thursday, May 26.
        The program will begin in the school auditorium promptly at 1 p.m. Attendees are asked to arrive no later than 12:45 p.m.
 
Small Business Basics
        The Ohio Small Business Development Center at Terra State Community College is offering free, three-hour “Small Business Basics” seminars for entrepreneurs looking to start, buy or expand a small business.
        Participants will learn the basics of name registration, licensing, taxes, zoning, business entities, employees, insurance, financing and business planning.
        Seminars will be offered at Terra State Community College, 2830 Napoleon Rd., Fremont, in the Doepker Leadership & Entrepreneurial Center, Building B, Room 103. Dates include:
        • Wednesday, May 4, 8:30-11:30 a.m.
        • Wednesday, May 18, 4:30-7:30 p.m.

KidsCollege enrolling
        Terra State Community College will host KidsCollege from July 18-21 on the Fremont campus, 2830 Napoleon Rd.
        KidsCollege, designed for students entering first through eighth grade, offers classes in arts, fitness, food, foreign language, science, technology and more. Students have the opportunity to sign up for a maximum of four classes during the day, and each class is 70 minutes long. Morning and afternoon classes are available.

        Supervised lunch is available for students registered for all-day programming. Students are required to check in when they arrive for the day or when they return from leaving campus. Students must be picked up at the same entrance no later than 15 minutes after the end of the scheduled session.
        Registration for KidsCollege can be completed online at learn.terra.edu, via email at learn@terra.edu or by phone at 419-559-2255. There is a family registration discount of 10% off the total for participants from the same household who register for four or more classes.
 
Lake commemorates
100 years of Safety Patrol

        Lake Elementary School’s Safety Patrollers raised the 100th Anniversary Commemorative Flag on April 13.
        Lake has been a proud participant of AAA-sponsored Safety Patrol since 2018. Each year, fourth-grade students apply to be patroller. Those selected are then responsible to help ensure student safety as they are traveling to and from the buses and parent pick-up and drop-off points at school.
 
Owens receives state
funds for job training

        The Ohio Department of Higher Education has invested nearly $190,000 in Owens Community College to create the Ohio Short-Term Certificate Grant Program, allowing in-state students to receive up to $2,000 in need-based aid toward the cost of in-demand, career certificates.
        Eligible students may apply and receive up to three different awards, provided the certificates are completed in succession.
        These certificates include 26 credit and non-credit options in manufacturing and skilled trades, pre-apprenticeships, health support professions, logistics, office support, sales and first responders. Credit certificates are 30 hours or less, while non-credit certificates are 900 clock hours or less.
        “We are excited to bring this opportunity to Owens Community College students,” said Dr. Denise Smith, Owens Provost and Chief Academic Officer. “After they complete their short-term certificate or credential, they will be prepared for licensure, if it’s required for employment, or they will be able to take the next step in a career pathway.”
        Students may apply online for the Ohio Short-Term Certificate Grant Program funds immediately using the online application at owens.edu/financial_aid/scholarships/. Ohio Business Week
        Ohio Business Week invites high school students to apply for a hands-on experience designed to educate and empower them to recognize and achieve their potential.
        The weeklong residential program will be held at Ohio University July 10-16 and focuses on skills in entrepreneurship, leadership, communication, teamwork and problem-solving. Students undertake hands-on projects providing them the opportunity to operate a business and create a new product or service, complete with a business plan, financials, marketing materials, a website and a commercial. The week concludes with a public tradeshow and presentation judging.
        Business leaders, educators, high school students and community volunteers teach and inspire one another to be responsible employees, employers and citizens.
        Up to 150 students will be accepted. Students can apply online at OhioBusinessWeek.org.
 
Owens English professor
earns national honors

        Owens Community College Professor of English Jen Hazel has been selected for the 2022 Dale P. Parnell Faculty Distinction Recognition by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC).
        The highly competitive national designation honors faculty who are active in their students’ lives and in their colleges’ activities to ensure student success.
        Hazel has taught at Owens for 15 years. In addition to her classroom instruction, she serves as the campus Assessment Lead and on the Completion, Center for Teaching and Innovation Implementation, and Opening Week teams. She also co-chairs the Curriculum Committee and the BIG Read, and chairs the Oregon Road Film Series and The Silo committees.
        In the Humanities Department, where she is the program director, she currently spearheads the effort to embed tutoring into Composition I courses and is incorporating educational resources into other courses to ensure students have access to the support and materials they need to succeed.
